Anyone using a good app to keep tabs on your servers? Had a dedicated with HostGator go down last night and didn't know about it until this AM. I probably lost millions because of it. I searched a bit but wasn't finding anything relevant to my interests.

Pingdom can text you or tweet you.

Thanks

Your hosting company doesn't monitor your servers?

I'm sure they monitor them, but I don't think they contact you if there's a problem. What kind of sense does that make?

Millions off of one server... Hey, let me take a look under the hood there for ya? Free Consulting.. ;)

Ok I may have exaggerated the millions number, but I definitely lost a few bucks.

Yes pingdom works great. I run a lot of volume and my publisher was pinging the offer every minute to make sure it was up after a DDoS attack and it took us a bit to find out why stats didn't match up until we blocked pingdom as counting as a hit: ("pingdom",CGI.HTTP_USER_AGENT)

would be cool if these services could also tell if system services like httpd/sql are functioning

sometimes the server is pinging but shit is down

The company I work for does this, but its generated more to the Enterprise and Service Providers. You could use Nagios or something and do ICMP + TCP checks against the port.

Pingdom looks pretty good for what I need. I wonder if there's an actual iphone app that will do this, plus give you up/down time reports etc.

Yes Pingdom is awesome been using their app since the day it came out. You can set reports in your online account and view/get updates VIA the app on your phone. It's awesome did I say that already?
