If you could start over again in this business what would you do different?

Well I would disagree with the oil over enron as I made quite a bit selling long premium on Enron all the way to zero when I was a floor trader on the CBOE. Of course I wish I would have put that money I made in oil but my gains in gold havent been too bad though. But, if you could start over again in the internet marketing business what would you do different?

I'm still trying to figure out what to do with about $4000 here to start off.

I wish I would have focused on more profitable ventures. For example, I've spent a ton of time on my blog, outside of a handful of the blogging book sales it really hasn't made much money.

But.. these low revenue projects have given me really good insight, knowledge, and contacts. Even in retrospect, I don't think there is much I would have done differently.

Another little thing I've noticed is that the high profit stuff tends to only work for so long, then other people figure it out and do it. The lower profit stuff tends to result in more stable & long term revenue. For example, last year I dropped $3000 on a premium domain and started a forum. The revenue from it so far has been pretty mediocre for the amount of time and effort I've put into it. But, I've built a base of very loyal users around it and its been growing by word of mouth. 5 years from now, I know the site will still be around and making money (assuming I haven't sold it.)

I would have started to take this business a lot more serious a lot sooner than I did.

I would have sat down and did some serious work, rather than trying to make a quick buck in a week. Work more for the long term.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Doesn't affiliate marketing go hand in hand with publishing?
exactly my thoughts

You have to publish a site to market affiliates.........

I wouldn't have dicked with marketing to marketers (although it's profitable, I was too new to offer anything really valuable at the time), and wouldn't have spent so much time figuring out the "right" way to do things - I've learned all I know from actually doing, not reading some asshat's opinion of what I *should* be doing.

I thought always that it was more or the less the same!

I guess that's why I'm considered a "noob" to all this. Sometimes all the different terms and techniques makes my head spin!
