i just wrote out a long ass response to this and got a database error posting it, and im not going to write it again. stupid fucking wickedfire fuck you.

Ah sorry to hear that barman. Maybe a synopsis of your opinion wouldn't hurt? I'd certainly appreciate it.

I'm at Rutgers.

Shotzy-and others- thanks for the wake up call. I'm always thinking about increasing assets and decreasing liabilities, but obviously not acting on it. I was thinking about investing in real estate instead of renting on campus, but I guess it's pretty clear I should build up a safety net before I even think about that. I need to kill that urge for fancy, shiny things.

I'm still going to take a semester off. I was burnt out at college and not focused at all.

I suppose it couldn't hurt to get a degree, but I won't see the point of taking on another 20k of debt on just to get a piece of paper when I'm NOT going to work a corporate job after graduation. AM and other creative ventures is what I was made for. I have tried and I can't work a fucking job and be happy doing that.

I've launched a start up before, and I can see myself working in start ups, but I don't like corporate- it's just a way to be stuck in the rate race (not that all this debt isn't either).

Nonetheless, I thought we were more entrepreneurial at WF. What's this sentiment about not being able to make it without a degree. Aren't you guys pulling like 5k a month is that just a minority of the people here.

3 years into Rutgers and you still generalize like a McDonalds grunt.

Dude, game over man, game over.

I'm telling you dude. You need to graduate. Who knows where your life will take you. In a few years you may be burnt out on AM and need to get a job like a regular hump.

In most cases you will be passed over for good shit because you lack the degree.

This is a generalization. I recognize that it is very possible to be extremely successful without a degree. I'm just saying that for your situation with 3 years under your belt, you'd be an ass to not stack the deck in your favor by getting the degree.

Whoa, 60K in student loans and you don't intend on obtaining a degree? You are basically throwing that money away because although you gained knowledge and employer would rather see a certificate/diploma. Don't throw away your education. :D

bb_wolfe speaks the truth.

60k in debt, looking at adding 14k debt for a car, and has no job. Your AM income isn't much, and isn't stable.

The advice you have gotten in this thread is spot on in my opinion so I won't add to it.

maybe 1k in profit

You should be eliminating this "maybe" as your top priority before you do any other AM work. If you don't know your net profit all of your other stats don't count for jack.

School is easy. If you can do aff marketing, I've realized something about school: It only requires your attendance. If you go to every class, you really can't fail. I used to get pissed about stupid fuckers I know passing school and doing well, but I was not. It's because they went to every class and sat there, and drew pictures. It's not hard, it's just discipline to make yourself unplug, and be bored for an hour or two a day.

You're so close to your degree and youre going to give up? Im jealous dude, I wish I was close to my degree. Regardless, i keep playing "the mans game" because thats the only way to win sometimes.

How about this....

Move back home (free rent)
Get a regular day job to pay your bills/debt
Finish school
Spend $3k on a used Honda or Toyota

I dont see how buying a 14k car helps you in any way unless you want to impress your friends with a new ride.

Btw, you didn't "invest" in DJ gear. Investments are supposed to directly make you money. Buying DJ equipment is just purchasing a depreciating asset for the purpose of trying to make money being a DJ... which is more of a hobby unless you're the next Tiesto or something.

OP, if you have .0000000000001% of a fucking clue, Audax gave you a damn near perfect roadmap to teh rest of your life.

Trust me on this, get your own fucking apartment i dont care how cheap you will be saving more money than "living with your brothers or whatever crap that you call yourselves". Your roommates may be great, but their friends and friends who will drop by will fuck your relationship up.
Fuck the car, get a cheap honda for 4 to 5k. Reinvest EVERY SINGLE PENNY into your business. :) Simple.

Thanks audax, bb wolfe, and nmwando.

Your right about living with friends as it does get fucking annoying after a while and that's why I do want my own place eventually.

But for now I'll be living at home.

Looking for a cheap car now- something I can run into the ground before buying another hooptie.

I will be back in school for the spring semester. I have a feeling if I go back immediately things will turn out exactly the same- I'll have zero motivation for school, be physically unfit, and ditch exams like I was doing last semester. This is coming from a kid who was on the Dean's list for the first two years of college.

Sometimes it's necessary to take a break and thus I think it's critical that I take a semester off. It's a lot easier to finish something when you're motivated than when you're depressed.

Attendance. That sounds way too simple. But you're right, I'm familiar with those very same kids.

And I hate "the man's" game.

Get the degree. I left school and started my own business during my senior year. Made a bunch of money. Sold the business. I was the smartest guy in the world.

Started another. It sucked donkey balls. Lost a bunch of money. Started another. Lost a little more.

Then I figured I would work for the man, but I was living in Atlanta and the school was in New York. Always a battle when needing some corporate money explaining why I did not finish the degree. All the guys hiring did, that is part of the corporate tribe mentality.

Now 43, still no degree, working for myself and happy. But when I need a corporate cash infusion it is always way too much work. That safety net is hard to break without the degree.

So my advice from someone who went down your path, finish the degree, get the piece of paper. It may seem like nothing to you, but to the weenies that you may need to suck up to 10 years from now when a venture went belly up it is their Holy Grail.

I made 6 figures in 1989 in Manhattan in profit and another 6 selling the business, but I probably missed out on the same amount over the years not having the sheepskin when I needed it.
