Best piece of advice given in this thread, whether it applies to black gangsta thugs, Klansmen, Jihadists, whatever.Consider that the problem is not so much the skin color you are afraid of, as much as the front they are putting up.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you feel uncomfortably outnumbered by people of a different culture/race the smartest thing to do is look them directly in the eye one by one and act as if they are the ones that are out of place, then ignore them. Instinct will tell them you are either a cop or crazy so nobody will fuck with you. I've split tested this shit in some pretty dangerous places in my life and it works every time.

In your white American male life, you are (usually) the majority. People are usually feeling uncomfortable in large groups of you.
If I don't feel comfortable enough to speak because I'm just feeling awkward, then I just keep a pleasant relaxed look on my face, maybe a slight smile and have an air like I'm deep in thought. People usually respond well to this.
As long as you don't confuse general discomfort with fear. If you're uncomfortable because something is wrong, then listen to your gut, do what you must and then get out.
BUT Most of the time we're just uncomfortable because we feel we don't belong or we think people naturally don't like us because [...fill in the paranoid blank]. Also, for the majority here try to remember: In your white American male life, you are (usually) the majority. People are usually feeling uncomfortable in large groups of you.
I`m from Vancouver, we don`t have any black people there. But damn those Chinese guys are scary.
You should be nervous. White people will drug you, BBQ you, eat you, and feed your penis to their dogs. Don't let their smiles fool you.
I think we're coming at this from completely different life experiences here. I grew up on the eastside of Detroit and didn't know what it meant to be "in the majority" until I was in my mid-twenties. And I can promise you that being in the minority in a place like Detroit is quite a bit more uncomfortable (and exponentially more dangerous) than being a minority in the suburbs.
