I doubled my Adsense CTR on a site by including image ads.

They do.

This site get's 3000-4000 uv's per day and I've tracked every change I've made from color, to position. Until this recent change to include image ads, those two 300x250 ad blocks, right next to each other, above the content performed at 5-6% average CTR.

When I had only one ad unit there, it was between 3-4% CTR. I tested this for a month before I changed it back to the double ad.

Where do you place the image ads?
Above the content or in the middle?
Do you find relevance between content and images targeted by Adsense?
This last one issue made me to shut image ads off.

Above the content (in this case it's above the game), above the fold is key. These image ad's are very relevant to the niche. You can see how I have it setup below.

^^^^^^Do you use a WP Plugin for this? I use adsense optimizer and I can't do 2 250x250 ads above the content....just one right in the center.

You ever test taking them out of the content and putting the blocks above the content instead?

For example:

instead of

adsensecontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontent
contentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontent
contentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontent

try
adsense
contentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontent
contentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontent
contentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentcontentconte

The above works ok for me, but below is what really pulls the CTR up for me.

Title
contentcontentcontent
336x280 - 336x280
contentcontentcontent
contentcontentcontent
contentcontentcontent

OR

Title
contentcontentcontent
300x250 - 300x250
contentcontentcontent
contentcontentcontent
contentcontentcontent

I run Joomla sites so the above needs to be done manually to get it in the content (anyone finds a plugin for that puts the adsense in the content a certain amount of words please shoot me PM:D) - this I save for the most popular pages.

If I'm setting up the Adsense plugin I run -
not as high CTR, but automatic on every page I setup.

Title
300x250 - 300x250
contentcontentcontent
contentcontentcontent
contentcontentcontent

OR

Title
336x280 - 336x280

For my top CTR site I pulled 32.04%(total for the site) in October on just over 11k impressions. That site is laser targeted and pulls over 30% CTR month after month. I also have Amazon on the site which does fairly well so the Adsense CTR would actually be higher if I pulled the Amazon off.

Most sites average 9.0 - 16.0% CTR with a few niches being a pain in the ass to get clicks for and pulling in the low single digits.

I've tried almost every color known to man on most of the sites and have found the damn standard blue to be the best for CTR on my sites. Have tried blending them in, but the above with blue links and a perfectly blended border/background works best. I also get the text as close to the background as google will let me;).

Also, tweaking for each site works best for me as I found what pulls the best CTR for one site (one niche) doesn't necessarily pull the best CTR for all sites/niches.

This thread is why I love WF - I got the same optimization email and ignored it because of how awful image ads had performed in the past. Thanks for all of the info!

Thanks for sharing this.
This page is a win win setup.
You can get clicks from text ads, image ads and in game ads (Mochi Ads I guess).

Thanks dchuk, can this be used in Joomla? Possibly a hack into the current plugin. Anyone able to insert adsense sitewide by plugin yet for Joomla.

WHAT I meant to say above and it won't let me edit.

Anyone able to insert adsense sitewide "within the content" (after first paragraph) by plugin yet for Joomla. If so please IM so thread stays on topic.

What????

Efeezy - after changing to include image ads, your "ecpms" stayed the same as you mentioned, so how are you making more money? besides doubling your clicks? am i missing something here?

It was up a little at first, not much though. After running it for a couple of weeks, I've noticed a larger, more stable increase. Some days I get huge eCPM spikes, which is probably just advertiser competition, so it's difficult to tell if the image ads help the eCPM or if it's just the day of the week.

Good thread, +rep

I've implemented this on one of my highest traffic sites and will see how it goes.

Thanks uncle efeezy :)

I've never had any problems doing it that way.

Did you disable your adsense plugin first?

Tyler - Are you sure your post widths are larger than 500? That could fuck it up, i would imagine.
Thanks guys I figured it out, I just put the code in the wrong place. Incidentally today while I was just running (1) 250x250 block above the content instead of my usual set up on the right sidebar I already got a much higher CTR.

I am not sure if AdSense matches the ad with the image but there are image advertising companies that will do that. I saw it on yourautostuff.com
