How to monetize a music site?

So I'm looking to attempt a first shot at building a site to SEO for organic traffic, and I feel I've got a pretty decent niche idea.

It's a somewhat obscure genre of music I'm into that really started to take off in the last five or so years. The term "**** artists" gets about 22,000 global monthly searches according to googles keyword tool, and there is very little in terms of competition (none at all, really). I figure I can pretty easily set up an artist directory site for this that gives a small bio of the artist and their music, along with some examples of their tracks that can be downloaded. I'd also have a blog portion of the site where I could post news or whatever else related to the genre. I've found a couple of these sort of sites, but their rarely ever updated or have very few backlinks. Seems pretty easy to get in front of these as they don't even show up on 1 - 10 in the serps for the keyword phrase.

Only problem is I'm not sure how exactly to monetize this correctly. I've never done this in the first place so although I'm familiar with some common ways like adsense or displaying affiliate offers, other than that I'm not positive what else would be best for this sort of thing. This genre has a lot of its music online on youtube/for download as well, so that's another issue.. I'm not positive how many people actually would be buying music, but I figure with that many searches leading to nowhere really, there has to be something I could do.

You could look into BuyWidget

Or look for somewhat related cpm ads or zip/email submits.

You could also create a product around your niche of some kind. This usually takes time and you actually need to provide something helpful if you want it to sell well. My recommendation would be if there are other products that the traffic you have would be interested in to run the affiliate offers.

I have a music site and I just have AdSense on it.

it doesnt make a lot but w/e i'm happy w the results for what it is. 22k isnt that many searches, you will prob get 1-300 hits a day to your site assuming you get it on 1st page.

add in a user email submit field and save their email. Mail them weekly updates or w/e w links to your site or music to buy.

Amazon links to t-shirts and other artist branded merchandise, zazzle links to the artists' merchandise (if that's what they use to sell their merch).
