how do I locate the owner of a private domain

You either can contact the registrar by phone or if you check a "Whois",
the registrar will show the owner's email with something like:
"proxy611536@1and1-private-registration.com"
You can send the owner an email.

try calling them with the number in the whois..most people overlook this one

You can send an email to the the email associated with the whois and that will forward to the owner automatically..

Yup , email the whois email associated with it , it should forward to the owner's actual email , else if it's a major issue - try contacting the registrar.
