Home Servers/Windows Home Server

it all depends how much data you have. 500 gb or less go with something like mozy

I have serveral terabytes so i have a mac mini as a home server and then offsite the data somewhere else. I already had the mac mini or I would just go get a $200 nettop

edit: all the raid in the world wont protect your data from a fire.

Couldn't you just use drives from different manufacturers to eliminate that variable?

You could but then you start running into strange performance issues (if the backup system needs to also be somewhat active rather than just a backup). If one drive read/writes faster than the others it can have some unwanted effects on speed and even stability if you have a cheap raid card.

There are other options for that too:

Fire resistant up to 1,550F, water resistant to 10', and comes with recovery plan just in case there is a bigger issue.

Some of these little home servers look nice.

But I am in need of a home-server that will stream movies to any computer on the network. This includes BlueRay rips ideally.

I'm thinking I should probably just get a regular computer to act as the server? I'd also like to be able to use uTorrent on the server computer.

I'd love a low energy consuming server but I definitely need enough power for good movie streaming and torrent downloading.

my guess is that ability to stream is mostly a function of network speed followed by hard disk speed. I still think you could get away with a $200 nettop for that.
