I'll bet if one of the mods did an IP check, he/she'd find that half the "hi, i'm new here, look at me please" threads are started by existing members.
After awhile, you can tell who's sincere. Doesn't make it less a crime, of course. Just easier to ignore most of 'em. I'm surprised some of the obvious ones get so much traction.
