Help Me Find a Notebook!

Acer just released a "macbook" mimic with the built in webcam, gloss screen (my acer has a gloss screen, fantastic piece of kit, makes dells, alienwares and the macbooks look like utter bollocks).

I'd recommend an acer over anything at the moment, purely for the after-sale support :)

I have a Sony Vaio and a Toshiba. I definitely like the Toshiba better.

If I was buying another laptop tomorrow, I would check out Toshiba first. But there is one feature I would not compromise on: analog volumn control. It's a must-have. When you check out videos, messing with the stupid digital volumn control is a pain.

I think all laptops now come with wifi, so that shouldn't be an issue.

well I can't recommend a laptop since I would go with a higher end one like Sager but here is a list of laptop batteries that have recently been recalled by Dell because they have a chance of catching on fire.

The following battery models, only, may be subject to recall:

Kyleirwin- card sticks out bigtime, can loose it etc. the best EV-DO provider out now is Verizon and I think they are in San Diego

If you are trying to get the best bang for your buck, acer has some nice models with a lot of built in features for relatively cheap(like good RAM, webcam, bluetooth wireless,..etc) or again Dell, even though they did have the battery recall problem recently, i still suggest them. with some hot deals that come out at least once a week you can get a decent 1gb Ram(sometimes 2GB) at least 80Gb HD, WiFi,..etc.etc. for about 1,000 max!

I doubt Jon will read all these replies.

Oh well.. working with computers for a few years taught me something - apathy is the best emotion.

I need to buy a notebook so that when I travel I can do work and not suffer from extreme work and internet withdrawal. I actually plan on doing a lot of traveling over this year, so I want to buy something that will last for a while.

I need your help because I don't know much when it comes to laptops, more so because I am not much of a lappy fan in general.

Here's what I need:

At least 1.3GHz AMD or Intel processor
At least 60 GB for my work, music and porn collections.
Must be able to connect wirelessly to WiFi hotspots or broadband.
Long battery life (must also include wall adapter)
Screen size is of no importance, tablet notebooks are fine too.
The brand/model itself must have a pretty good track record of not fucking up or breaking.
Windows XP Pro is preferred. Definitely NOT a Mac.

I don't need the top of the line model either because I don't think I'll be using it much except when traveling/conferences and going to meetings here and there. As long as it has the requirements above I think I'll be okay for the next few years.

For pricing, I figure something $1500 or less would be okay. I don't give a shit about the brand just so long as they aren't complete shit.

So if you want to help me out and find me something, then by all means, join their aff program if they have one and link me so you get credit for it. I am looking to buy one asap.
I know you said you wont get a Dell unless it's an XPS but the Dell Latitude D620's are good machines. That's what we've been getting for our staff at work. Mine is on order and my boss already has one and it's a nice laptop. Very thin, professional looking and would be all you need for what you said you needed it for. The XPS' are more for gaming and all that.

Jon -

My roommate bought a really nice Asus laptop. Comfortable travel size.. I believe it has a 14 or 15inch widescreen display. Two batteries, 1 built into the hinge and one standard size. It has a nice metal enclosure .. so it doesn't feel cheap like a dell or a hp. Has a ton of ports including 3 usb 2.0 ports and a multimedia card reader(s).. bluetooth.. Had about a 4 hour battery life with a single battery.. never tried it with both.

The model he has is a W3A

I'd take a look at their new models.

Should last a while and it should only run about $2-3 at your local Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Krogers, etc.

Whatever you do, don't get an Averatec. I will forever regret THAT decision. Let's just say my laptop now needs to sit on four CD cases if I want to avoid it getting so hot that it melts things and shuts down every half hour. :eek7:

Another consideration - resolution! When I was laptop shopping, I didn't even think to make sure that I would be able to go beyond 1024x768. Figured that was a given, but apparently not.
