Okay, I tried to answer, but you just need to jump into the unknown and see for yourself.
Andrey did you experience an "ego death" yourself from taking psychedelics?
Yes
To me this term sounds both interesting and scary at the same time. Interesting because we all want to become something higher, but scary because if you truly experience ego death (and the feeling doesn't go away), you can't really live life the same way ever again, right?
The real never dies, the unreal never lived. You will only lose the illusion. You don't lose your experience of thoughts, feelings, emotions, desires, fears. You just see your true nature as something much deeper and much more profound.
The ego is not so easy to fully destroy so that it doesn't come back.

To maintain the state your consciousness must be purified of all the worldly tendencies. 99.99% of people come back to their normal ego state. However, if you have gained understanding about how your mind/consciousness works, that remains with you. Also you might be greatly inspired to gain this state in a normal life through spiritual pratice.
Basically you realize yourself as something that cannot be observed, but that which can observe everything. So whatever is observable (visions, feelings, hallucinations, thoughts, shapes, lights, sounds) cannot touch you, cannot really affect you, cannot kill you, as you are only an awareness. It is really a death of death, as this place in you can watch the death occur to your body.
Also ego death for some ppl might be a very seemless and smooth process. If you are already a loving kind person, your attention is likely to abide more in the heart than in the mind and this is exactly what you need to smoothly find yourself unbound of all limitation.
Now let's say you know you are not particularly calm guy. Maybe you believe yourself to be an alpha male. You like to be in control. When control is slipping thru your fingers like sand you feel uneasy. If this is you, you are advised to bring yourself more into the heart center. From my experience ego death is like descending of male energy in the heart while feminine energy rises up. So in a way two merge in the heart. It feels very much like falling in love. But you fall in love with yourself.
If you can remain in the heart or as the heart rather than the mind like we usually do you can be granted with a smooth onset. Meditative experience is also greatly helpful.
I mean, why would you want to be sitting on your chair doing SEO and trying to make a money online if you experience ego death? Wouldn't it all seem pointless? Our job is all about ego. Hell, our modern world is about ego. It's all about trying to deliver a better service/product than competitors. It's a total ego game. Don't you think?
While the unlimited nature opens up to you. You still understand that you are in a way limited to this body for a duration of this life. So yeah you gotta survive. Now this survival might take a new shape. Your priorities might shift from dominating and being the best to being content and to be constantly perfect yourself in whatever you do. The ego death is only the beginning not the end. It is when your life really starts. It is when you might realize damn I have been always aiming too low with my money desires. You realize that you can aim 10x or 100x more and nothing stands on your way.
Just look at Steve Jobs. His ego death didn't prevent him from doing what he did. Even many ppl think he has a huge ego.
Watch this about Tibetian Book of the Dead also mentions Timothy Leary:

P.S. One huge reason to do this trip is to practice for death. If you follow the eastern way of thinking about this, your state during the death decides your future life or where you go after. So if you do a trip and have a hellish experience, you can clearly see that this or worse is what will happen to you. So everyone should do this, if they care about their long-term well-being.
