One time I was visiting my grandpa, who has a rather extensive gun collection (super right wing, south Orange County, etc), and he was letting me mess with his sniper rifle (which he insists is a "target rifle")...

It wasn't loaded or anything, but I remember pointing it out the window and following beachgoers around with the crosshairs...thinking of how freaked out they would be if they knew someone had a sniper rifle fixed on their neck. The range was incredible.

Something to think about.

Don't worry, as of now I only own a bb gun.

It likely was a target rifle........."Sniper Rifles" usually are considered military weapons designed for killing people. Target rifles are usually designed for shooting paper or animals............

Oddly enough I did the same thing as a teen visiting the Army recruiting officer's house in Bellingham, WA. He was a huge gamer nerd and had the entire US navy, or at least several of the "fleets", in Micro Armor along with several divisions of land based units.

His was a 50 cal sniper rifle of some sort with one of the largest scopes I've ever seen.

He was always packing a concealed snub nosed revolver too.

I met all kind of guys big into their guns in Washington. Fired a few off in the woods around Mt. Baker.

Played a lot of paintball down there too.

My family had a weekend place in Sudden Valley and I went down every week for a good 10 years.

springfield xd's are great pistols. I also have nothing against glocks, besides them being ugly.

As far as the shotguns, unless you are a BIG dude, or very comfortable with guns, DON'T get a shotgun with a pistol grip.

i have 2 guns and a permit to carry. One is a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber and the other a Ruger 9mm.

In my opinion, Para Ordnance are a cut above most handguns if you want quality.

Their carry series is fucking slick:

Otherwise you really can't go wrong with HK, Ruger or a Beretta.

I had that EXACT model and hated it , had 2 seperate times where I grabbed it in the middle of the night and it wouldn't load right (so I ended up keeping the chamber open with a mag in it, which wasn't my preference). However it was CRAZY accurate, I was hitting 6" steel plates @ 50 yards 95% of the time with crappy walmart ball ammo. I also managed to have maybe 5FTFs per 500 rounds (the FNP hasn't had any issues yet).

OH HAI GUYZ:

recommendations (besides glock)? thinking about an HK mark 23. something .45 caliber.
HK's are fine weapons, a little pricey, but just consider that HK's are the standard sidearm for U.S. Navy SEALs. That speaks volumes in and of itself. I own a variety of handguns (no HK...yet), and I have to say that my favorite is my SIG 220. It's a .45 with night sights and Houge grips. The only failure I experience with it was due to the ammunition.

I also own a Kimber Custom II, which is a 1911, also in .45. That gun is magical. A very close second to my Sig. The only reason it's not my carry gun is due to the face that it's not double action. For you I would definitely recommend you check out some Sig's, they are fantastic weapons. The Federal Air Marshall's carry those, and when you think about the environment they have to operate in, it makes for a glowing recommendation.

You may also want to check out the Springfield XD series. I have a 9mm XD subcompact and that gun is wonderful. For a 3 inch barrel it is extremely accurate and I have yet to have a failure with it after close to a thousand rounds through it.

Glocks have a reputation of jamming and other mechanical failures.

And get the black one not the chrome because in a situation where you are protecting yourself you don't want something reflective, save that shit for the movies.

I disagree. I have never heard of experienced shooters complain about Glocks jamming or having mechanical failures. Many years ago, there was a batch that came out of the factory with some defects, but that was over a decade ago and very limited. In own a Glock 23, which was my daily carry gun, and have never had a problem with it. I bought that the day I turned 21. I have probably put well over 5,000 rounds through it with not a single failure due to the gun. My pops owns two Glocks and he has yet to experience a failure. They are fantastic weapons and I would recommend them to anyone.

I've got a Springfield XD 40 subcompact. I love that little fucker.
Have one myself, in 9mm, and I totally agree. It's a great firearm. My fiancee has offically taken it as her own because she loves it so much.

I'm curious to know exactly why you guys carry guns around. I'm in the UK so its slightly different here at the mo, but do you guys really walk around packing heat? and under what circumstances would you actually use it?

I know if I was allowed to carry a sidearm on my person, I would most likely be dead or in prison, cos I can think of at least half a dozen situations in the past where I would have used it.

Why would you be dead or in jail? The only reason one would have to worry about that is if they're too irresponsible or lack the maturity needed to take on the responsibility of carrying a firearm. Under what circumstances would one use a gun? I think it's pretty obvious but I would use mine when I feel my life or the life of another is in grave danger.

And why do I carry a gun? Well, not sure about you, but I don't have a personal bodyguard with me 24/7. I refuse to be a victim. Police are not their for you're protection, they are there to respond to a crime AFTER it has been committed. What are you to do at the very moment when one happens. It's not like you can ask your assailant to hang on a second while you call the police and wait for them to arrive. It's a matter of taking responsibility for your life and the lives of those you love. I would rather not leave things like that to chance.

As far as the shotguns, unless you are a BIG dude, or very comfortable with guns, DON'T get a shotgun with a pistol grip.
Agreed. Pistol grips are horrible for accuracy. Now people will say that you "don't even need to aim" with a shotgun, but that's bullshit. You also lose a great deal of control which lowers your time for follow ups. If you must have a pistol grip I would recommend getting a folding stock, that way you can choose between the two. One for fun one for business.

Edit: Just realized this was an older thread, oh well...
