recommendations (besides glock)? thinking about an HK mark 23. something .45 caliber.
 


The HK .45 USP is another good choice. Smaller than the Mark 23 and lighter. My bro has one and I love it. Shooting it is like pointing a finger at the target. The gun fits nicely in your hand and is balanced well.

I have also heard that Taurus makes good pistols.
 
If you haven't done so, I suggest taking a certified handgun safety course. I took one as a prerequisite to obtaining my concealed weapons permit. The instructor will make available a number of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols for you to become familiar with and fire. Also, students are encouraged to bring their weapons for use during the firing range portion of the course. You will find that a lot of folks will show up with the more popular weapons and are usually more than happy to let you try theirs out.

IMHO a great way to learn how to be a responsible gun owner and get hands on experience with a weapon before you decide to purchase. Also, it may be wise to obtain your concealed weapons permit soon before the government decides to make it any more difficult. I primarily got mine because I spend a lot of time in remote areas of Maine and always carry a sidearm. I just wanted to avoid any potential hassle with the law while transporting in my vehicle.
 
I'm curious to know exactly why you guys carry guns around. I'm in the UK so its slightly different here at the mo, but do you guys really walk around packing heat? and under what circumstances would you actually use it?

I know if I was allowed to carry a sidearm on my person, I would most likely be dead or in prison, cos I can think of at least half a dozen situations in the past where I would have used it.
 
I really like Walther p-99s. But Glocks HKs and Berettas are nice as well.

I also recomend training or renting some at a firing range.

The HKs look ideal on paper for most people but I dont like the handle or trigger as much as some.

And the above poster said he was packing in remote parts of Maine. I also carry weapons in the middle of nowhere. Really there is no small incident out there. Things will escalate and not stop.

In the city people dont want to look bad or get videod beating the crap out of you.

I also used to work in a downtown retail store and we would get broke into at night and then I get to clear the store if I could not get the cops to do it.

dude this is america, we are armed to the fucking teeth.

that said, only a fraction of people who buy handguns carry them on their persons. To do so requires a concealed weapons permit and a fairly extenstive background check. Most people who buy handguns keep them at their homes and maybe go shoot them at a gun range.

I just found out that in my state, i dont need a permit to buy a shotgun. Since I just bought a house, its time to get one I think.
 
What Jizz said is a great suggestion. At the very least I would say go around to local gun shops and hold several. The grips and weight might lead you to one that you like. You will atleast get the feel for what you are looking for although you will not be able to see what the kick of each is. My favorite .45 that I like to shoot is the S+W 1911. My wife has the compact version of the same pistol.

conv3rsion - smart choice on a shotgun for home defense. Most people get a handgun for that but a shotgun is by far a better choice.

pickled - we are suppose to. It's in our Constitution.
 
I really like my Browning 9mm, i have two of them, they are a little heavy but they feel good to me. and i usually shoot hydro-shocks with it. seems to get the job done.
 
My favorites that I have shot are the springfield XD in .40 or .45 and the Walther PPS in .40 or even the Walther P99 which is a 9mm. Those pistols seem to feel the most comfortable and never had any problems with accuracy, jamming, etc.
