Guidelines for selecting profitable niches

Let's say I wanted to make an Amazon or Clickbank or whatever site.

Uh....a niche off the top of my head.... Taco Makers


So I look on google. "Taco Makers" in quotes generates 500,000 other pages. Let's say I have a few products to promote on this page.

how do I know if a niche is saturated or just right for relatively quick ranking (maybe a few months)? When picking niches, how much competition is too much for you guys? And what are ways to determine this?

The first place I would look is Google's own keyword tool here:

Using you example of taco makers (??), it only has medium competition according to Google. If you scroll down or sort by global searches. you will find that tortilla presses actually has a higher number of actual monthly searches (22,000) whilst still having only medium competition.

If you change tabs to traffic estimator it will show you how much it would cost you to run an adwords campaign to your amazon based site, and in this case it would be fuck all.

So the next question is would you be able to dominate that niche, getting good rankings and position in the serps?

For this I would suggest that you go to seo book and sign up for free and get the firefox plugin/addon SEO for firefox. Use that to analyze the the strength of your intended competitors sites and see if you are in a position to overtake them in the rankings.

By strength I mean the number of backlinks and the quality of the backlinks. looking at the numbers for tortilla presses actually looks pretty good. Taco makers as a term is pretty hopeless (I know it is just an example) because the search volume is way to low.
