Grieve's Affiliate Marketing Journey into Success or Squalor. Most Likely Squalor.

10/26/11

The way Facebook approves/disapproves is a bit of a mystery to me. If I simply resubmit a disapproved ad, it is disapproved within a minute. If I change the image slightly and resubmit, I'm waiting for the next few hours, and the approval/disapproval can go either way. I'm guessing Facebook uses some sort of flagging system, where if an ad is resubmitted without any changes, it simply gets denied? What part of the ad are they looking to change? If I simply alter the image slightly, or simply remove the image and reupload it, will that give me a fairer shot at getting it approved instead of just auto-denied? Sigh... Facebook, you cause me so much heartache :P

Yeah, it gets more and more intense the closer you get to potentially making your first profit. I find that working in the dating-niche also gets you plenty of naysayers who tell you to quit while you're ahead because dating is oversaturated, more trouble than its worth, etc. I honestly feel like I'm making huge steps towards profiting, and I feel like it WILL be in fact worth it in the end. I love a challenge. That's not so wrong, is it?

grieve, your tenacity and thoughtfulness are inspiring. Keep going!

Today brings another milestone in my journey. Profit? Not quite. Breaking even? Yup... iissshhh. Today's numbers:

Spent: 20.00
Made: 19.00

I actually spent most of the day at a profit, but at around 10pm local time (local to the country I was running it in) suggested bids seemed to go up and I inadvertently killed my ads? I don't really know, but there was a period of time where my ads just simply stopped receiving impressions. I paused them for 10 minutes, upped each of my bids by 1 cent, and then the impressions started rolling in again. That hour or so where my ads were effectively dead drove my costs up (2 clicks every few minutes or so) and drove my epcs down. Still, though, I was averaging around .14 epc which is my best yet, and my conversion rate was great as well.

Goals for tomorrow is to try and edit my images better to catch more eyes and get more clicks. This country is giving me a REALLY, REALLY hard time getting some ads approved. I refuse to give up on trying to get them accepted, but its a damn pain in the ass. I'm talking at least 30+ denies daily on the same image. I'm going to keep trying. Anyway, I know the key to entering "money making mode" at this point is the better CTR for lower clicks, so image-editing is where I'm heading to next. My average CPC today was in the 10 cent range, and I KNOW it can get way, way better than that. Wish me luck, everyone. Thanks for all the support.

i think what secretagentdad meant by non major traffic source are smaller ppc companies such a 7search etc.

From what I see Adcenter is also moving towards the same trend as google adsense.

Many PPC affiliates are moving into SEO now

Ever hear the saying "The more of a bitch it is to get an ad approved, the better it is probably going to do?" Lol:

Broad targeting, image took me a week and a half of nonstop round-the-clock submitting, with near instant denies. Never gave up on it, though.

Broke even again today. I was testing new images, so with the initial high CPC, it was expected. I've got 3 or 4 "good" ads that I'm planning on running now, so I should start seeing some profit. Tomorrow will be a telling day. Ideally I'd like to optimize further, because 8-9 cent bids, and .15 epc with an 11% conversion rate aren't good enough for me. I want to do better.

grieve, I'm happy to hear you are near the break-even point for the second day in a row. It's really refreshing to read about someone who doesn't cut and run when a campaign or idea doesn't offer an incredible ROI right away. Your willingness to continue improving and optimizing your ideas/campaigns is going to pay off. This is inspiring, keep it up!

Any update Grieve? Was put off by dating at first but you might be a newb inspiration for me! Really enjoyed your posts so far. As Icetoeskimos said... keep it up!

keep up the good work! If you can make facebook dating work then you can make it work almost anywhere else. facebook can be brutal but once you get it to work you will be sitting pretty for awhile milking that cow. Until you gotta do it all over again

Good stuff man, have you tried Plenty Of Fish also for dating offers? If you see the EWA FB page they talk a lot about it there.

So, it has been a few days since I've updated, and that's because I've been hard at work! I'm ecstatic to say that I've officially started "profiting" to a certain degree! Things haven't exactly been going "according to plan" though, and I'll explain on a day-by-day basis.

Day 1:

25 dollars profit.
Numbers were great on this day. Higher epc's than I had ever seen with this offer, and it was converting at a pretty great percentage. At the rate I was going, I was expecting around a 100 dollar profit for the day. This was despite prosper not tracking conversions at all, and I found out I needed SSL installed on my domain to get pixel tracking working properly... so.. things took longer than I planned to get that up and going and I had to pause. Still, it was my first profitable day ever, and 25 dollars was a big deal (to me.)

Day 2:

7 dollars profit.
The issue that hurt me most on Day 2 was that Day 1 gave me EXCELLENT conversions, but my CTR on the ads took a hit. As in, people were less likely to click, but if they did, it was more likely to convert. On Day 2, I suffered because my click costs were higher than Day 1, and oppositely, people were more likely to click, and less likely to convert. Numbers were greatly varied by hour, and as a result I saw disappointing epcs throughout the day. I believe I started running at bad hours, and I think I have a better idea of which hours "work" for this traffic on Day 2. The good thing about this day was that with all the clicking people were doing, my CTRs went back up to comfortable levels.

Day 3

Broke even

Disappointing day overall, but I won't let that stop me. My biggest lesson this day was running it at an apparently "bad" hour, as there were PLENTY of clicks with ZERO conversions. I was in the negatives for a while, but once I ran it at a different hour, I came back and got to "break even" levels. Lesson learned.

Goals:

Right now, I feel like I'll go into next week with a much better idea on which hours are "profitable" for me to run ads. I also need to work on optimizing ads. Right now, my average CPC is 9 cents, and while that's enough to be profitable if I'm working the proper hours, but I'm sure it can get much better. This international country gives me a total demographic of 650k, and while that's not too many people, its big enough to where I feel like if I were "properly" doing this, I'd be able to get way more than 20 dollars out of it a day.

So, in list form, goals for this week:

- Optimization of the ads I'm already running. Try out editing the images differently to make them more eye-catching, etc
- Optimization of my "running hours." I have a better idea of what hours are going to give me the best return.
- Putting up more campaigns. Now that I know at a very basic level how Facebook "works", I'm planning on putting up at least 1 campaign a day. I've got 15 or 16 campaigns that I want to work on at the moment, and even if I were making 20/day from each of those campaigns, that alone is pretty decent money. The thing is, though.. I feel like 20/day per campaign is CHUMP CHANGE and I'm clearly not milking the campaign to anywhere near its full potential. I really really really need to work on squeezing out every single cent.

If anyone has any suggestions/advice, I'd really appreciate it! As always, contact me on skype @ georgek8911. Please include a note in your request so I know you're from wickedfire and not some spam-bot. Thanks everyone!

Nope, haven't tried it at all... yet. I've heard that its a pretty steep investment on its own, and I'm trying to stay focused on Facebook for now. Once I feel like I truly "know" the ins and outs of Facebook, I'm going to start looking at new traffic sources.

With how FUCKING HARD this has been, I'm hoping that is the case :) I think I'm getting closer and closer to cracking Facebook. It's tough.

Signed up with another network today known for their big selection of international dating offers (hint hint). I'm looking into international dating on Facebook for now, since I'd like to stick to my guns, but I'm also looking at email/zip submit offers as well, since those seem pretty approachable to a newbie like myself. I'm looking at various platforms to publish these offers... anyone have any suggestions? PM me if you'd like to keep it on the DL ;)

Also, if there's anyone reading this that has experience with Facebook, dating specifically, I'd love to chat with you via Skype/AIM/PM/adultfriendfinder/WHATEVER... just looking for someone that could potentially help "enlighten me" a bit.

Note: I'd also like to say once again, thanks BIG TIME to all the people providing me with motivation + words of advice. You guys are all an inspiration to me.

pm me your aim

You've probably already mentioned it already, are you using Direct linking or have you got a landing page you're using? I'm assuming it's direct linking considering it's an international country, but just wanted to check

Got one of my images retro-banned across 3 of my campaigns. Really fucking sucks. Oh well.

Also, if anyone that does Facebook dating wants to talk, I've got things that I want to discuss with you. Please PM me or add me at georgek8911 on Skype.

Tested a new campaign in a different country. 270 clicks, 0 conversions. CTR was .366 after 270 clicks, suggested bids are now 2 cents. Problem is... this campaign isn't tracking conversions properly. Tested it myself, it is definitely not tracking any conversions. My birthday is tomorrow... so much for a birthday present :P Oh well, gotta keep grinding.

Thanks! Woke up to the frontpage of Stackthatmoney forums open in my browser... girlfriend got it for me as a gift! She's the best. Reviews coming soon! ~~
