Got myself a dog today

Why didn't you opt to get a puppy? You would be closer to it. It would be closer to you for sure. It's a lot of work sometimes (training), but it is worth it imo.

Everybody wants a puppy. It's the reason why there's so many great dogs in high kill shelters.

Props to dchuk for rescuing this little guy.

He's a one year old dachshund named Chuk:

Got him from a couple who had adopted him but turned out the husband is allergic to dogs. He's already a stellar dude, still learning Jhis name but is playful and loves to cuddle. Since I work at home I'm stoked to have a buddy chillin with me during the day. Plus he doesn't bark at all which is awesome.

wow looks super entitled already. does he expect to continue this behaviour throughout his stay? dont want to generalize, but it doesnlt look like hes coded a line of perl in his life. put him to work writing content if you have the same inter-household rules i have.

That's probably true, but all dogs can and do snap and I personally wouldn't want a dog around that could kill with kids around. It does happen and you rarely hear about smaller, less agressive dogs killing children though most dog bites are from labradors and golden retrievers. Basically, if you have a pittbull it simply can't bite, not even once or there will be huge consequences.

Not hating on your dog though, I'm sure it's a great companion.

Sorry, but you're an absolute fool if you think any dog "snaps" for no reason. Dogs who are socialized properly are not prone to having temperament issues, and that's especially true for American Pit Bulls (and all Bully breeds), as they're excellent around kids and were once known as Nanny dogs. There's more APBT's used for therapy dogs than any other breed. Why, because they're evil? Makes sense.

Anyone who believes otherwise is a media fool who has never been around a truly socialized dog. I have owned many APBT's in my life and can tell you that NO APBT is born vicious.

The only reason they're more dangerous than other dogs is that their jaws and physical abilities are above most dogs, and so many idiots have bred them to be mean.

The APBT was once the "American dog" and the face of the Marines, yet dog fighters and foolish people who spread propaganda have destroyed millions of these great dogs, and caused city-wide bans, resulting in millions of dogs being killed for NO reason.

Stop spreading propaganda.

Congrats. Dachshunds are nice dogs. Make sure you're careful of his back though, they have a tendency to injure them. My grandma's had to be put down after it jumped off a sofa in fright during a thunderstorm and dislocated one of its vertebrae.

It's best if you train them not to jump on furniture, couches, beds etc when they're young for that reason, so when they get older, they don't do things that risk injury.

yeah I bought him a ramp for my bed and am working on training him to only use that. Our couch is fairly low to the ground so jumping up and down to that isn't too crazy, might still get a little box or step for him for out there too since he likes to sleep next to me while I'm on the couch.

Nice friend you got there buddy, but I don't see why you had to embarrass him like that, though.

Taking a picture of your dog hugging a phallus-shaped furry thing in his sleep, probably hinting to the fact that he's gay, is not aaaight.

You're just one step away from this:

lulz. dachshunds were bred originally to catch badgers (hence the weird body shape) so a long badger-like toy is right up his alley.

There is but one thing that can wipe the smile off my face whenever I see a dog: that dog wearing clothes.

dchuk, how could you? Why would you?! Leave the canine dress-up shenanigans to the female folk.

Sigh. Poor thing.

this made me lol. I'm going to be dressing him up for his favorite team on game day, not some foofy girly stuff. Might even do some eye paint

small update: careful rearrangement of letters in my username here (and my real last name) leads us to have developed Chuk's full name to be: Chuk D

I love this kid. Had him since he was a couple months old. Next month he'll be turning 7 years young.

Now you're just being ignorant.

I have been curious about having a dog but I keep thinking it might annoy me if its all needy.

The whole a man's best friend idea is intriguing, having a perma 3 year old in a house is not. :(

All the positives outshine the negatives.

it's all in how you raise it. Some dog breeds are super loyal and need to be around you at all times, but even then it's endearing at most as long as you train it correctly and make sure it's not an annoying pet.

Most shitty dogs are because of their owners neglecting them.
