Good Pro Poker Resources?

One of my friends from childhood is one of the founders of a large poker training site, and also a high stakes cash player (up to 500/1000 blinds), and after talking to him and a few other professional poker players, what has been said in this thread is pretty accurate. The level of play has increased dramatically over the last few years, due largely to the vast proliferation of poker knowledge and the rise of online training sites. Back in the day, I heard it was absolutely insanely easy to make tons of money playing online poker. I guess it was the equivalent of banking $1M+/year by selling MySpace layouts on teh Adwerdz. But now, not so much. Play for fun, but don't assume it'll turn into a full-time six-figure a year career. The only way I would get into online poker is through some sort of marketing partnership with the established poker training sites.

Although... It IS still good money playing Live poker.

make sure you go around 1am and so you can be fresh when the room is full of tired people who will make mistakes, and its GREAT at 2 when the casino closes and drunk people dont want to go home so they come play poker... EASY MONEY

I made a living from online poker for the last 3-4 years. If you are considering getting into it now with the intention of actually making some consistent money - dont.

Poisonsembrace pretty much covered it. Even if you are a winning player (and you are not) your edge is far smaller than it used to be, games are tougher and very few people at midstakes (2/4NL) and above are actually significant winners anymore. Because your edge is now so small, variance is through the roof and even long term winners can break even or lose for months on end.

If your idea of a fun hobby is playing .10c/.25c games and winning $5 an hour then go for it, otherwise stick to what you are already good at and make your monies online with affil marketing.

PLEASE!!! LISTEN! to this guy, Keeping poker as a hobby is very important, my advice, is get a weekly home game going or join another. .5/1 or 1/2 NL Cash game is fine, get someone who can run it right with good food, cool guys, and real tables and a low rake.

I've won over 100k in the primetime of playing online, and now it would be the most stressful job anyone can have, if it's a job. Honestly i think any hobby that's on the Computer is a no-no, and could easily get in the way of Online Moniez. Even small things like youtube and facebook, probably rape the shit out of peoples time and monies. If you do play replace it with your 1-2 hours of tv a day or whatever ritual you have, play some cash games : .1/.25. .

Defintely get a home game going or join another one.

I couldn't agree more with what is being said. If you are interested in keeping your hobb.y competitive, play low limits along with sit n gos. If you are looking for some poker reading, I recommend reading both Kill Phil and Kill Everyone. Not as vicious as the titles would make you think

Yeah, online poker has dried up a HUGE extent.

It use to be super easy to make 200k+/year in 05/06. Now there are many former rockstars who win at rate barely above break even.

I use to play a lot of poker online, But now I find it so boring. I normally don't like to play the cash games because of the tilt factor and tournaments are always so long and boring. So I would stick to the sit n go's. I made a couple grand from playing poker awhile ago but I don't trust the poker software anymore. People say its all legit, but what do they know. The amount of insanely low possibility of some of the hands you see on a regular night is just... not normal.

And like everyone said the fishes are rare. Ever since the TV poker boom fish would flood the sites, but after awhile it died down and the poker ban just made it worse. It's inconvenient to deposit now and a lot of people think they would get in trouble for gambling online so they don't even bother. If I were you id stay away, save your time and money.

Much more fun to go play at casinos IMO, especially if you can find some really touristy types. I go maybe once or twice a month to a dog track/card room in Daytona, and it's always entertaining- and usually make a few bucks. But mostly it's something to do to get out of the house.
