I know a few people who make good cash online playing poker and have fun doing it. I by no means need to resort to gambling to make cash online but it seems like a good hobby to take up that could also be profitable. That being said, I know dick about poker--like seriously, pretty much nothing.

Does anyone have any good links/videos to good poker training resources or anything? I pretty much want to go from newb to decent enough to make cash playing as soon as possible. Any advice? If it's relevant at all I already have Poker Stars installed + an account and plan on using it as my primary poker playing "platform".

I know this is a newb ass question and just as useless as asking someone how many backlinks it takes to get to the front page of X keyword--but how about how long did it take you to start getting good/start making "good" money playing poker?

Seriously, fuck poker.

The average player is much more aware of what makes for a good starting hand and it isn't as easy to make money playing as it was 5 years ago. There are still plenty of retards who play but there are not as many fish swimming in that ocean anymore.

Your edge as a player is much smaller than what it was a few years ago and 99% of poker players would make more money working at McDonalds. Your EV is much higher if you stick to IM.

I use to play 50k hands a month (not much these days) and it's not fun if you're playing to make money. For fun? Sure, go for it. Just don't get roped into all the bullshit because it's all marketing. Every kid has some pipe dream of making the world series these days.

Start with SNGs (single table tournaments) and learn about ICM (independent chip model, mathematics of +expected value unexploitable plays). That will give you a good base.

After that, log a lot of hours, ask a lot of questions. If you have a natural understanding of math, expected value and odds, you'll catch on pretty quick.

After that, it's all state of mind. You have to be able to stay logical, and not become emotional. Money is no object.

This site should help get you started as well. Free Poker Videos | Online Poker Training Videos

FWIW and to echo another poster, the games are MUCH more difficult than they were several years ago.

I probably did things a little wrong, in theory if you play limit hold-em better than most of the other people at your table you can expect to win a blind or two an hour, so if you're playing several tables at the same time you can almost make decent money given that assumption, but limit bored the hell out of me so I played games where I could win an amount that seemed worthwhile, like $55 sit-and-go's. I pretty much gave up playing online as I think a lot of cheating is tolerated, particularly in sit-and-go's, pretty hard to play half the table in a live game.

To be honest,

Dont listen to anything that you hear on here about poker. I dont say that with the intent of putting anyone down, i mean it with the best of intentions.

Poker is a game that once you learn the fundamentals (beginning hands / pot odds / outs / etc) there is nothing else that people can really teach you.

You can learn from other people and imitate their style, but if it is not your style than you will never do as well as you should if you are playing your own unique style.

I have experience playing poker (full time for 8 months) since i was 18 (so 7 years now) both online and live, and i really need to say that no one can teach you how YOU should play better than yourself.

Best thing i can suggest is to go online, and play some play money poker for the first bit to get a hang of the basics, after which you can deposit a SMALL amount of money and play the micro stakes on any site.

one word of warning... DO NOT play over your skill limit, when you are new, start at the micro stakes with all of the other new players, if you go above your skill limit, you WILL get destroyed... the level of play when you hit the 5/10 blind limit is insane in comparison to the 0.01/0.02 blind limit.

If you have any poker questions, just shoot me a PM, i am more than happy to help when ever i can, (I Love the game, but only play live anymore)

I have a couple of friends who quit their jobs to play poker. One of them is raking it in playing online, don't know stats but he has made over 100k in about a year, the other hasn't really been making much.. just recently hes trying to play 70 hours a week. I saw his statistics, he played about 4000 sit n go's in 1 week and profited $1 per game. Sounds extremely monotonous to me, I doubt he can keep going like that.

Dude, there is nothing more frustrating than poker. I started playing in 05' and played non-stop for about three years. I made some good money, but that was when i was running well and not getting fucked in the ass by donkeys. Like was already said, it's fun if you just want to play for fun- it's a totally different story if you're trying to pay rent with your winnings. The swings can be huge, and if you're running like shit, they can be enormous.

The only way to learn how to play is to start playing some micro-limits. Might as well go on poker stars. Good luck, bro, but stick to IM. Poker is like getting a blowjob from a girl with braces.

gambling isn't a good way to make money online, stay focused man

Well... gambling can be a good way to make money, you just have to know what you are doing, and avoid the swings (usually caused my tilting)

Being new, you WILL tilt like CRAZY

Tilting is referring to being beaten in a bad hand (Getting sucked out on) and going crazy trying to A. Get your money back and B. Get back at the person who sucked out on you.

1. Play FREE money to learn the basics
2. Play MICRO stakes to learn how to win and take losses.
3. Play WITHIN your skill and money level, do NOT get frustrated and move up limits in an attempt to make back money.

Follow those three rules and you will have a nice starting foundation to online poker.

Again, if you have any questions, just PM me, and i am happy to talk Poker for hours.

i play full tilt with play money. I just think poker is funny because you can accidently win a lot of money

I made a living from online poker for the last 3-4 years. If you are considering getting into it now with the intention of actually making some consistent money - dont.

Poisonsembrace pretty much covered it. Even if you are a winning player (and you are not) your edge is far smaller than it used to be, games are tougher and very few people at midstakes (2/4NL) and above are actually significant winners anymore. Because your edge is now so small, variance is through the roof and even long term winners can break even or lose for months on end.

If your idea of a fun hobby is playing .10c/.25c games and winning $5 an hour then go for it, otherwise stick to what you are already good at and make your monies online with affil marketing.

with all of the competition in poker nowadays you could always play one of the smaller / less popular games?

Omaha 8 / 2-7 Low Ball are VERY soft games right now... all of the people who want to start playing, are playing holdem, driving the competition WAY UP. but those less popular games can be VERY soft and if you can gain the edge on people, a very good profit maker.
