Honestly.. as you said, it really does depend on the niche and keywords quite a lot. You could maybe get as little as 10 visitors from yahoo news on the first day (if your targeting keywords that are say out of season or highly obscure) or you can end up with hundreds or thousands of visitors if you play your cards right.
The traffic will usually continue for a few weeks, if not for much longer. But again that may be dribbles of 1-10 visitors a day or a much higher number.
Even if you do get stuck with only a few visitors a day, we find the Yahoo News traffic to be the best quality and converts much better than most. Keep in mind your website/landing page still has to be optimized to convert.
Get it all right and you can make some really nice $$$$$
We too are using the traffic with our own side projects with great success. CPA offers, Affiliate offers/products/services etc.. anything really that pays you per lead/conversion.

Yes, it's sometimes a hassle to come up with an "announcement" for each order, but if you tell me I'll double my money its not that hard to get creative.
They drive tons of traffic to my site, and statistically visitors are way more pre-qualified than adwords visits or banner visits. I think it has something to do with the perceived professionalism of "news" content- when they click over from a press release they buy much more often than when they come from almost any other source (in my experience)
