Fuck You, Jay Leno

One thing I don't buy into though is the preloaded viewers, people who stay on the same channel through prime time shows - local news - tonight show/late night.

I mean, back when Jay took over, 10 years ago, even 5 years ago, sure, I'd believe it.
But in today's world of on screen menus, 100+ channels, and DVRs, I don't know anyone who stays on the same channel for basically 2 1/2 - 3 hours straight.

That's a really good point. I know that preloading was huge years ago. Network execs took great pains to schedule shows that claimed blocks of nights rather than splotches of territory across the week.

DVR has definitely turned that upside-down.

^ Jay Leno didn't have Carson doing a show before him taking away all those potential viewers either. Jay Leno is a douche for doing the primetime show in the first place.

Leno is just doing what he loves (he obviously isn't doing it for the money).
And NBC didn't want to lose him to another network. Blame NBC if you want, but I don't see the fault landing on Leno for this.

Yes, I saw his 2004 announcement, but so what? 5 years is a lot of time for someone to change their mind about something. I liken it to a professional sports player, such as Michael Jordan retiring, and then coming back. He didn't do it for the money, it was because he loves the sport, the competition. Same deal with Leno, and I don't see a problem with it.

He sure as hell controls if he retires or not.

Of course, absolutely.

But, the only reason he hasn't retired, is because he enjoys what he does.
And obviously the network wants him around, so who are we to say that he (or anyone else), should retire?

I just don't believe that saying "he should retire", is a valid reason to blame Leno.

Conan could have stayed with the Tonight Show, it simply would have been pushed back 30 minutes. That was Conan's choice, and he chose to walk away.
I don't see what the big deal about 30 minutes is anyway. You can argue (as Conan did), that since a show has historically been broadcast at a certain time, it should stay that way.

Well, in today's world with DVRs, internet broadcast, etc... time slots are not nearly as important as they used to be. I can't even tell you what time most of my favorite shows actually come on, because they are all set to record, and I watch them when I have the free time to do so. The number of people who have similar viewing habits (dvr and watch whenever), will only increase as time moves on.

Conan was going by the agreement they made 5 years ago. How can you blame him for wanting to stick to the agreement?

If anything Leno's demographic is smaller than Conan's.

Actually, in Conan's agreement, a specific time slot was never listed. It was simply an agreement to host the Tonight Show. His lawyers screwed that up. That's why NBC was able to offer Conan the Tonight Show 30 minutes later.

All I know is Conan was the only show I watched on NBC and I watched it when it came on (don't have DVR). If Conan leaves, that means I won't watch anything on NBC... and there are millions of people like me.

Wrong. The time was in the contract. Moving the show was a breach of the contract.

I'm sure that's true. Conan will have viewers that follow him to Fox or wherever he ends up.

NBC is calculating that any loss will be more than made up for by Jay...and as much as NBC has screwed up in the past, I have to agree. I think Leno has more of a mass appeal type of comedy, while Conan is of a certain type of humor that a lot of people just don't "get".

The problem NBC has now...who the heck replaces Jay when he retires?? I sure don't see it being Jimmy Fallon!

That could be true, not saying you are wrong, but I've read otherwise.

[Conan's] contract, NBC is arguing, guaranteed Mr. O’Brien would be installed as host of “The Tonight Show” — and unlike many other deals for late-night stars, Mr. O’Brien’s contract contains no specific language about the time period the show would occupy,
said. (Bill Carter, NYT)

That could be true, not saying you are wrong, but I've read otherwise.

That's the first I've read that anywhere, if true, stupid lawyers indeed.

Anyway, it is completely Leno's fault. Here's an example... My grandmother loves Leno and has to watch him before she goes to sleep. Once Leno went to 9pm (CST), she started going to sleep at 10pm, skipping the news.

The NBC affiliates everywhere started to complain because people were going to sleep after Leno and their nightly news ratings dropped... which of course meant Conan didn't get a chance at any of those viewers either.

If Jay would have just retired like he said, nobody would be upset and Conan's numbers would be more realistic. I talked to my grandmother earlier today and she said the first time she had EVER watched Conan was last week... "to see what all the fuss was about". I asked her if she would have watched him after the news if Leno wasn't on TV anymore and she said, yes, because she hates Letterman and "needs a lighthearted show on her tv before bedtime" and that she's been watching the Tonight Show for the better part of 30 years (she considered Jay at 9pm to be the real Tonight Show).

The timing became right to do the Tonight Show swap AND put Leno on prime time because (due to recession) NBC was losing sponsorships and could not support a 10 pm drama without advertisers. When times are lean, suddenly you have time to micro-manage and think too much. What a fucking knee-jerk!

What is so engaging about the entertainment industry when times are lean? There is no originality in scripts because nobody is willing to take a risk. And when they do have balls - guess what? It's usually an out of the park home run. Nobody cares about Jay or Conan interviewing the same turds starring in the same movies over and over again - televsion show remakes, comic book remakes, bestseller to big screen crap - suck my dick. Everybody is scraping to make a living and are not interested in listening to 8 minutes of some douchebag's ski trip to Aspen, followed by a 30 sec plug for a straight to DVD movie . People at that time are either getting ass or fighting over stupid shit because they're not.

so this makes it Leno's fault, and not the executives'?

if by "millions" you mean "a few thousand on reddit and digg under the age of 30", sure. but "millions" are not going to mass exodus from NBC. ever hear of the office? local news, sports, etc etc.

In other news, Human Target is jawsome! @subigo, just watch Tosh.0, Daily Show/Colbert Report, and Louis (on FX when it comes out). Conan and Leno can't touch any of those I just listed.

"If Jay would have just retired", sounds like "If the other team wasn't so much better, we would have won".

It's Possible, but not a guarantee. If Jay had went to another network, perhaps those viewers that followed him to 10pm, would have followed him to another network too?

I'm probably in the minority, but I prefer both Conan and Jay over the Daily Show. I can't stand the Daily Show or Jon Stewart.
