First Credit Card, which one should I/Can I pick?

I've never trusted myself with a credit card because I've seen what some irresponsible people do with theirs.

However, I realize that I'm going to have to have a decent credit score if I want to buy something big like a house or car anytime soon.

I'm wondering what credit card is suitable for a beginner like me. I'm a college student and I've been looking at some student cards, but they don't offer much of a rewards program.

I like the American Express/Costco card, but do you think I can get approved for it?

Is there any other American Express card you recommend for beginners?

get 2 credit cards. doesnt matter which ones unless ur putting a lot of money on them.

pay off in full every month

rinse and repeat until you have a high credit score and a high credit limit.
 
You want to get Visa, Master and any other one. You DO NOT want to have more than three CC. Otherwise your credit history gets f..d up.
Check all the options you have in the banks and get any CC you like the most.

You will get approved for Amex Zinc. Only catch is you have to pay it off in full every month but that shouldn't be a problem. Annual fee is just $25 but it has a good rewards program.

You will also get approved for "BankAmericard," BofA's intro credit card.
 
If you don't have any credit history, good luck getting a credit card right now. You can see about getting a secured credit card through your bank, or a gas card to build up your credit score.
 
If you don't have any credit get someone to add you as an authorized user on their account. Just make sure it's someone that actually pays their bill and has an impeccable credit history. Any history on that card will be reported for you as well.

Rollin with 2 credit cards is the best way to go. One card for points and the other for the lowest possible rate. Put all your every day purchases on your points card that you plan on paying back at the end of the month and any more expensive/long term purchases on your lower interest rate card.

Points programs cost the credit card companies money which they pass along as higher interest rates.
 
Let me just go out on a limb and say don't ever get a credit card if you can help it. There are plenty of ways to raise your credit and show a good credit history without them. I owe $4k on mine and it kinda bugs me because it was all on crap that I thought I needed at the time but that I really didn't.

Don't listen to this guy. Listen to me.

I'm 19 and got my first credit card at 18 with (obviously) no credit history. If you are under 21, you need a cosigner (thanks to some Jan 2011 laws). Otherwise, you should be good getting the Amex Zinc or BankAmericard. Or whatever intro card your bank offers.

Thanks man, I'm gonna probably end up getting the Amex Zinc with my dad as a cosigner.
