Its simple. Over there being large is a sign of wealth as it means you can afford to eat. There is a distinct difference between the tastes of the Africans and for instance Canadian born black men. You cant lump them all together because its night and day.

My theory is, that both black guys and fat white girls are in many cases poor, due too racism, troubling life circumstances or simply being born into a lower caste. This drives them to various addictions such as comfort foods (its also cheaper than eating healthy). So the connection would be, that they're simply living in the same neighbourhoods.
Another theory would be, that the connection itself is overstated because we tend to overstate things that seem extraordinary...even though there might not be statistical validity to it.

I once worked with a whole lot of Jamaican dudes, jockeys actually so they were all real tiny. All went for the larger white women. If nothing else it always brought a smile to my face.
