Extreme Productivity - Drugs, Mindset, Something Else?

take out most of your money and buy a bunch of shit you don't need, an F car, clothes, etc...panic...
you'll be crunching code in no time again. Nothing makes you lazier as being loaded and nothing makes you more productive than being broke.

^ Thanks dchuk. Does it affect sleep? Effectiveness over the course of a few days/weeks? If it's just another caffeine sub I don't really care for it.

It's not like an energy drink, you don't get a buzz. I've only been taking it for 3 days now. I sleep like a fucking rock when I have taken it, it's great because I'm a terrible sleeper.

Let me know if the effects wear off in a few days. The problem with most legal alternatives is that they build up a huge tolerance within a few days and your body no longer reacts the same as the first time.

I'll report back after a few weeks, only been taking it this week. Been doing one in the morning and one after lunch to stave off mid afternoon sleepiness.

In all seriousness, if you have a Mac definitely check this out: SelfControlGAY|GAYSteve Lambert

It's badass. It blocks you from dicking around on a blacklist of sites for X amount of time. Careful with it though, if you set the timer to 24 hours, you are literally setting it to 24 hours.

I like to set it before I go to bed to expire 4ish hours after I wake up. It makes for very productive mornings. Even if you spend the first hour trying to find alternate ways to dick around, eventually you just give into being productive. Then by the time it's over, you're so into your productivity that you just keep going.

EDIT: Why the fuck did it add "GAY" into the URL anchor? Hahahah

I had a really hard time with focusing and all that good stuff.

Now I'm doing much better by using the Pomodoro Method. Basically this is just a regular timer that you set to 25 minutes and you will do your best to complete all the tasks under the 25 minutes. After that, you have a 5 minutes break and then more 25 minutes of work.

It will work for the first couple of times at least, but if you don't take it seriously, it will end up having no effect.

I notice in hindsight that some days I'm extremely productive and others I basically sit around doing nothing. It's almost a sort-of momentum--once I get going, I'm really going, but if I don't get going, I never get going.

Thought about that for a sec and I figured I'd post a thread. What do you guys do for productivity? A lot of my friends basically say "get some self-control you fucking faggot!" which I agree with, but I'm sure there are little tips and tricks for real-world mood alteration/focus/etc.

Normally I drink a rip-it but those have little or no effect if I drink them every day. That and the momentum thing--I know if I get going I can maintain my pace more easily.

What do you guys do? Drugs? Outlook? I wish ripits had the same effect when used regularly.

If you are working with a coffee and this girl at your side... that is totally awesome..

get an office and hire 5 idiots with retarded positions
use the 5 idiots to polish your ego and their presence will make sure you don't waste time.

working on the internet is like doing math in a stripbar. it's impossible, too much distraction, disregard all this BS that was written here by others. face it.

For me personally it's a few things.

1. Passion. It's not always easy to be passionate about what you do. SEO, design, writing, etc can be pretty damn boring. I try to stick to what I enjoy and pay others to do the rest. (I like some forms of writing, I like networking with people and I like to pretend I know how to program.)

2. I have 3-4 specific goals every day that I force myself to do before doing anything else.

3. I set specific times to work, usually starting after a shower and lasting anywhere from 3-4 hours, usually longer, depending on what I have going on. But when I'm done for the day, I walk away.

4. I reflect on what I've done every day. I feel like shit on days I don't do shit.

5. For me personally, one of my biggest productivity killers is bars. I LOVE to go out and have fun. But anytime I have a hangover I'm worthless. So I keep myself in check. I guess know your weaknesses and attack them is what I'm saying.

6. Agreed with don't jack off. It drains your energy and also drives down your desire to hook up with real chicks (if you're single).

7. I work in 33 minute bursts. Heard it from Eugene Schwartz originally. But I set a timer, go balls to the wall for 33 minutes and then take a 15 minute break.

8. I like to test myself. Like "I'm going to earn $x amount in 2 hours" or "I'm earning enough to cover the rent today".

9. I reward myself. If I get more accomplished than I had planned, I'll do something fun.

10. When I am working, it's at 100% full stop. When I'm in the zone I swear I can get more done in an hour than I can in a day when I'm not feeling it.

11. I like having my back against a wall. I purposely make myself uncomfortable.

12. On your own shit, a good trick is to buy advertising for it in advance if possible. Then it's like a client project. You miss the deadline you fuck yourself out of money.

13. I primarily freelance for clients, and really feel a personal responsibility to do my best and make the deadline. Being accountable to other people is a big motivator for me.

14. When you're not moving it's hard to start. I'll tell myself "I'm just going to email this client" or "I'm just going to write 200 words" and once you get yourself in motion, it's really hard to stop.

15. Forums, FB, Skype, Email, AIM, etc are all HUGE time sucks. All necessary too. But I have times of the day where I'm unavailable on all fronts and focusing on production.

16. Take a vacation. I just did for 2 months. Just started working again a few days ago and I feel really motivated/recharged. I also take 3-4 day "mini-vacations" every couple of months, and make it a point to get away on weekends. Gotta take time to enjoy life.

And it's something I'm always working at.

Staying productive ain't easy. But it's essential if you want to be self-employed and successful.

Tried that bullshit.
I then forced myself to do something for a few days, which was basically just a fight against all the distractions.
then I set my $-goal, but face it, often you can't directly influence that.
like I doubt you made money on one day to cover your rent FROM SCRATCH.
it's rather like checking your stats and appreciating yourself.
I also tried rewarding myself for coming up with new income sources.
that goes like "yep, registered that domain for this project, that was a good job, now lets book some hotel and invite some hookers I really earned it"

There is a great free pomodoro android app that keeps track of all of the intervals for you. Highly recommended.

The problem is that, as someone else said in this thread, once you start something for 5 minutes you are not going to want to stop. You take a 5 minute break and it will quickly turn into an hour.
