having been on the recieving end of a gift from an ex I hadn't seen or spoken to in years, I can confirm it comes off as creepy and stalkerish. The gift was small and thoughtful (kind of inside joke gift) but it was entirely out of the blue and thoroughly weird. A happy birthday email would have been much less intimidating and might have saved the loss of respect.
