I missed this thread.
How come? Well, getting married and stuff made me not being able to see every thread that has been posted while I was away.
I wrote to Jon about this in a PM, so he knows I am pissed.
Again, Jon, if you are going to put up a contest, follow through.
Yes, I know "people should post and share for the love of the community".

Yes, I enjoy sharing my knowledge of things internet.
Yes, this community HAS GROWN on me, so I do a lot (like moderating) just to keep this community alive and well.
And YES, I might have put some more effort into it, because I thought I could win a contest by the wayside.
And as Jon said himself he "put up those contests as a way to get quality content and generate hype".
He got that.
Only because of the contests? Maybe not, but ask yourself: How many articles have been posted AFTER the article contest has been closed?
(I got one still in the works, but that don't count)
The participant of the contests got jack shit.
That's how I feel about it and that's the reason I am a teeny tiny bit PISSED OFF about this.
The resource section? Great stuff.

The resource area. Wow, again, as a mod you get access to a mods/admins only area where I showed everyone "this is the new resource area rough design" and everyone took part in telling me what they thought. In fact, Ben, the designer, and a member here too was speaking about it with the other mods. Where were you Emp? Who knows! Because you're never around. You're only around when you need something or when it's time to complain.

Sure, maybe the resource area is behind schedule now, it sucks, seriously. I would love to launch it asap. But some things take time to build until it's completely perfect. Will I get blasted for it being delayed? Maybe.. but I can assure you it's fucking worth it for the wait, and being that it's going to be free too, who cares if it's late?

Jon, I really do think it's great that you're doing this but the people who worked hard for the contest should get some kind of reward. If you want to close the contest, go right ahead. But the people who tried so hard to get the prize should be compensated in some way.
I'm sure you made this announcement because you did feel sorry to those who tried, and if you do really feel that, you know what to do.

god damn people, can we just move on. The contest died weeks ago. It died so that everyone could benifit from webmaster tools that will help us all. Jon did what he could and let the people who were entered into the contest have there say to help make the choice, (someone have a #of people that had done anything for the contest? was it that many?) there were some people who had links to stuff but I hate to think that the only reason they shared was so they could win a contest and not the desire to give to the greater good of everyone at wickedfire. I think that says something about the people that complained. If there was no contest would they not give any information? I think some have stopped. I think that is their loss because if you truly want to learn something and be good at it teach it! It sounds dumb but you will learn as much from teaching as doing! so for the love of fucking can we just move on?

While I agree with you that if you want to learn something you should teach it to others, I don't agree with you that you should write articles solely for the "greater good"
$25k is a lot to some people and here's nothing wrong with writing articles just to earn $25k. look at it as a job.
I honestly think emp and others should've gotten something for their work, but at the same time I am glad Jon is going to spend the money developing tools for us to use instead of paying us to write articles. It's a more appropriate use for the money.
Jon you made one mistake and it wasn't that you ended the contest, it was that started it.
You had good intentions and there's nothing wrong with that.. But you know yourself better than anyone here and you should've been able to realize that a contest of this size would have been a large undertaking.
Whether you wanted to give back to the community or generate hype, you accomplished both which makes you either a good businessman or generous (or both).
In the end the only thing that matters is family and friends, so who gives a shit what someone online thinks of you. When shit hits the fan, those people are miles away. So why bother making everyone happy?

Stanley - this was a contest, that means there would have been people who got nothing. that is not a business of any kind! you had to write stuff that impressed someone else. There were only going to be so many people who got this so I think your argument does not work. NOw if Jon had said, write 50 usefull articles and you are in, that would have been another story.

Theres tons of webmasters that increased their earnings by using the advice on this forum - the articles some of them wrote should be seen as their input into the community.. giving back..
