If you are interested in neural networks, you can just sign up for a course on computational cognitive neuroscience... luckily for you I have done just that last year.
Our course was conducted by a dude who develops one of the CCN models so it was by a dude with real field experience and not just theory BS.
Coolest thing about the class was that the book was a wiki. Here is the link
CCNBook/Language - Computational Cognitive Neuroscience Wiki You can just read the chapters cuz thats what I did. It also includes homework assignments so you'll better understand the concepts.
All of that is free! whereas I paid $1,500 for the right to get credit for the class and ask the dude questions IRL. =]
