eBay changing to pay per click

Today we're announcing Quality Click Pricing, a new payout structure designed to further reward the affiliates who drive incremental transactions on eBay and who send valued buyers to our sites.

What's Quality Click Pricing?

Until now, eBay Partner Network has paid for sales and leads. With Quality Click Pricing, we will now instead pay affiliates for each click sent to an eBay site. The price paid per click will still depend on the short-term and long-term revenue of the traffic that the publisher drives to eBay, but will now also take into account the incremental value of that traffic to eBay, i.e., whether a sale happened as a direct result of the publisher's actions. The greater the incremental revenue and the higher the expected lifetime value of the customers an affiliate sends, the higher the EPC and total earnings the affiliate will receive. Earnings Per Click (EPC) will be set daily for the previous day's traffic.

When will this change take place?

We plan to phase the introduction of Quality Click Pricing to ensure existing publishers have enough time to understand how this affects them.
  • New publishers that join the eBay Partner Network as of September 1st will be paid out under the new system. This includes all publishers joining as they transition from TradeDoubler and affilinet.
  • Publishers that joined eBay Partner Network prior to September 1st will remain on the current pricing system until October 1st, when they will begin to be paid under the new Quality Click Pricing payment structure. Before October 1st, and starting the last week in August, existing publishers will have access to a preview report to see how their new payouts compare with the existing payment structure for them.
How can I find out more about this change?

We know that you may have questions about Quality Click Pricing, so we have put together several resources to give you more information about it:
  • Read more about this change and some of the reasons behind it on our blog, including a FAQs document.
  • A new set of pages on the eBay Partner Network site that explain how Quality Click Pricing works in more detail will be available later today.
  • Two new videos that explain the concept of Quality Click Pricing (one available today and a second that will explain new reports on September 1st).
  • In addition, we will hold two live webinars to explain the change and give publishers the opportunity to ask questions. Find out more about the webinars.
We will also be on the boards more frequently over the next few days to answer publishers' questions.

We are very excited about the launch of Quality Click Pricing, as it will allow us to reward publishers who are driving high quality, engaged and incremental traffic to eBay. We are also committed to continuing to invest in helping our publishers succeed with eBay Partner Network, and to ensuring that everyone is rewarded fairly for the value they generate for eBay.

We look forward to working with you on this new endeavor. Thanks for your continued support!

Sincerely,

Steve Hartman,

The eBay Partner Network
Hmmm... bet they don't share how they work out the EPC.

I just wrote my first article in a LONG ass time about this:
PHPBay: Start to Finish Tutorial | Build And Earn

They don't tell you exactly, but they outline a few of the main principles:

  1. You get paid for the quality of the click, with a ton of different things making up the quality algo. They're looking at things like time spent on site, how early in the 7-day cookie they purchase, if they purchase what they clicked over to get, etc...
  2. Leads are no longer tiered levels but average payouts based on what they determine the quality is.
  3. You now get paid for part of the PayPal transaction fees made and also advertising found on EBay site for pages your clickers view
  4. The EPC is reset EVERY day for the PREVIOUS day's transactions which means the delay in revenue reporting is DRASTICALLY reduced. They take your historical EPC into great consideration to decide this EPC so your account history and track record with Ebay affiliate program is crucial.
Anyone here a Shopzilla Affiliate? I had great luck with them on a few sites and was planning on going back to them and building out some of their ads. WIth this move, I'm even more excited to ramp up some new phpBay sites.

If you're pushing quality traffic, you'll make more using this. If you push shit traffic you'll make less. Less people will be banned but you'll make dick if your traffic sucks ass.

Unfortunately new people signing up get to start Sept. 1st while existing folks gotta wait until October 1st. One cool thing is that we'll hbe able to see how much we WOULD be making each day under QCP starting late August, even though the old method will be used for payment.

This could be really good.... but nothing testing won't answer.

really unsure if this is going to help or hurt me at this point.. we were getting a lot of ACRU's and they were buying stuff (ebay motors products) yet ebay thinks they can just decide to not pay people what they are worth based on their bullshit top secret algorithms..

Hoping this works out in my favor cause we do generate a lot of clicks so maybe all will be good (after they slapped out QS for no reason i dont see how it could get worse)

@bigb - eBay specificall acknowledged EBay Motors sellers saying that they realize the dynamics and analytics of car shoppers is different than other types of items. They are therefore separating those when they calculate EPC so you don't get screwed if lots of people click to look at cars but don't end up purchasing, since a car is a big investment decision for example and conversion is probably lower.

@SEO Mike - thanks for the kind words. It has been that way for a hot minute... now I just gotta start posting again lol.

Unfortunately I doubt the same will apply to other areas, such as property.

I'm not convinced this is going to be a good thing for affiliates. I didn't care about the lack of transparency in the ACRU change - I figured that to be a perk, incentive, whatever - but to completely change and obfuscate the payout model from a straight percentage per sale to some 'quality traffic score' that is ripe for errors on ePN's side - that to me just seems to be placing too much faith in ePN.

I'll continue to use auction2post for generating great content and sure the rover links to eBay that generate some 'quality click pricing' will be fine - but I'm much more interested in checking out some of the retail affiliate programs out there and incorporating those into my sites as I described here. Mashup sites from now on...

So let me get this straight, eBay wants to reward people whos send them quality traffic (traffic that converts) by switching from a CPA model to some unclear CPC model?
Riiiiiiiiiiight.....

What about new signups? Still 25 for those? How much does that actually play a role in most of your earnings anyhow?

They're still at war with the cookie stuffers, IMO they should just shorten the cookie lifespan.

There's no more acru under this model.

I'm not sure why everyone is so doom and gloom. They said some people would be making more some less. Are they looking out for number 1? Of course. Are they looking to commit affiliate suicide? I don't think so. Either way we'll all find out in a week or so.

You get Paid More under this

You get paid more under this new system if you have high quality traffic. A whole lot more ;)

I've got half a dozen EPN sites I've been working on getting going. I think I'm going to hang back just until this nifty PPC format is up and running, then see how to fully take advantage of it.

How much you want to bet spiders clicking through to eBay dilute your EPC and you'll end up getting paid a lot less than you were before?

BTW: just an update, after their amazing network quality assurance guys re-evaluated my account, I'm still banned for life despite the fact someone else cookie stuffed with my ID. Whoever it was, congrats you beat me.

Edit 2 - I've considered using all of the spidered EPN id's I've collected to cookie stuff random accounts to prove to EPN that it's being done. I've tried everything else the legit way already but obviously they're too fucking clueless and stupid to handle it like a real company. Their communication is worse than Dell. Fuck. Ok, rant over.
