What are everyones views on dropshipping? Has anyone here actually been successful with it or do more people go with a more affiliate based approach. I would love to try it but it's very hard to find a reliable drop shipper that can be trusted.

Sound like a big headache to me -
but if you can find a very reliable dropshipper im sure there are lots of ££££ to be made

Its all about finding a very reliable dropshipper. Which can be very very very hard. Once most people find a good one, they will never tell anyone about it.

In my short experience with dropshipping I had zero problems.

If you can dropship from the manufacturer direct I think that's ideal... short of that it's kind of like reselling hosting, you're a bit at the mercy of your provider.

One of my online businesses dropshipps directly from the manufacturer. The downside is you have to handle customer support, in my case anyways. But i do enjoy higher margins then a typical affiliate program would.

How does dropshipping from a manufacturer work? How should you approach a manufacturer to see if they would be interested in such a venture?

There are many manufactures that already do dropshipping for their retailers. The issue is finding a manufacture that will let you only dropship and not have a retail store for their product. Many times the items they sell are large, high dollar items that can not be efficiently stocked in a retail store.

I can't really tell you how to seek them out, just keep your eyes open. The particular one that I work with just happened to be a company I worked with in my particular niche that I have expirence in.
