For the first year or so I used dreamhost I was absolutely pleased with their service. I turned on a lot of friends to their service and everybody was happy. But the last few months have been the worst i have experienced with ANY host. I was finally getting some good momentum on one of my sites and then my server fucking went down AGAIN!

Anyway, I am going to see if they will move me to a different server, because it just seems like too big of a hassle to move all my sites to a new host.

I realize there's not much of a point to this thread, but I just wanted to express my frustration.

I picked up some hosting with them because with the coupon on digg it was $24 for a year. I didn't even need the hosting but I picked it up anyways to host a few clients and test shit out. How could you not for $24!!! haha.

Anyways, my experiences with them have been all good. From what I have read, it's all about what server you get put on. So far mine has been rock solid and moderatly fast. I'm one of the lucky ones thus far.

It may be a gamble, but it's one hell of a cheap one :)

I've been using Dreamhost for the last 3 or 4 months and I love them. I've even experienced a decent amount of downtime and I still love them; why? Because they are completely open with all their problems. I've never seen a hosting company come off as honest and open as Dreamhost. Granted, the last month or two have been somewhat bad, but they admit it and explain what the problems are (and take most of the blame rather than making excuses).

They are incredibly cheap (as previously mentioned something like $24 a year with the promo) and they allow unlimited sites, mysql databases, domains, and a nearly limitless amount of space and bandwidth. If you want to run a large site, you shouldn't be looking at shared hosting anyway, so IMO Dreamhost is great for what it is, a cheap and flexible shared hosting service.

Like I said, I was happy with them for the first year. After about 14 months in I started noticing more and more down time and just an overall sense that sites were loading too slowly.

But as of now, I have essentially been down for almost 24 hours. And I'm not talking about a big site just a couple of small wordpress sites that absolutely any host should be able to handle. My last outage was August 21st and that was for about 12 hours.

8 hours after submitting a trouble ticket they tell me that my sites are fine but their MySQL server is overloaded and that may be affecting things. But the sites are still screwed up and some of them are completely down.

Is it not a good idea to have 2-3 seperate hosts? I do, mainly because if one host goes down I would only lose a third of my income, rather than all of it!

I own 14 dedicated servers.. even with all of that server space to go around, I still buy cheap shared plans every now and then, just for temp projects to see how they do.

where do you store them?

I don't have a dedicated host yet, but I do have sites spread over four different plans. My dreamhost sites had just started to really earn though and that's what pissed me off.

They are back up and running now - only about 24 hours downtime.

There are still a lot of things I like about dreamhost, I'm just saying that they may have overextended themselves because they have had a lot of problems over the past year and not just with sites I personally host with them.

The sites I have hosted at DreamHost have pretty good uptime from what I've seen. Recently they've been having a shit ton of problems though, seems they've got most of that squared away. It's cool how they have the DreamHost Status page, but it's even cooler how the status page is down right now. Shitheads.
Their packages are pretty good though, and their cs isn't bad.

I thought they might be shit, there prices are very low for terrabytes of data also they pay out $100 or something like that in affiliate fees.

I think they may have just overextended themselves. I am on Day #2 of serious downtime and my friends sites just went down as well.

The main reason it sucks is that I had finally figured out how to monetize them (thanks to WickedFire!) and they were finally starting to earn. Anyway...

Their dedicated plans are too much for me; and from what I've heard of them here and elsewhere, I'm not too encouraged to buy one.
