If you want smart and calmer go with female.

If you want...well I don't know why people want male dogs (other than breeding)
If you want them to hump your leg, go with male.

For Golden Retrievers, the females tend to be a little more independent and the males are a little more 'velcro' - the kind that follow you from room to room. You can't go wrong with either.

Good breeders often have waiting lists, so don't wait too long before you start making some calls and visiting some breeder's homes. Trust your gut - there are a lot of bad breeders out there so if you get a bad vibe - get out of there!

Many try not to have puppies available around Christmas. They often think the holidays are already too chaotic and worry about the puppies in their new homes or the fear that people will give their puppies as gifts. If you can't get the puppy for Christmas for your kid, you could wrap up a bunch of puppy toys and supplies or puppy training books as a gift instead so they know one is coming.

Good luck in your search!

I would research breed standards and find the best fit to your lifestyle and more importantly temperment towards children and family.

Good breeders won't let their puppies leave until they are about 8 weeks old so do the math. Also I think it's good to get one this age because that separation from the litter at that age leads to minimal impact and fairly immediate bonding.

If you've never had a puppy before, in the interim I would strongly recommend a book called The Art of Raising a Puppy (clean link). Written by these Monks that raise and train German Shepard's. Invaluable tips that actually work. After the book, get yourself a pet crate.

Be prepared though - YOU are the one who will actually be getting trained.

I'm not new to owning a dog, just haven't had one in a while. I know he is dead set on a Golden though. Today we visited a breeder that we screened and even though I paid a good chunk, I felt really good about the owners, good family with kids. We went to their house and met the parent dogs as well and all were very good natured and very cute....

so I folded:

In about 6 weeks or so, you will need to get some tennis balls. A tennis ball + a kid + a golden retriever pup = very inexpensive form of exercise/entertainment for many hours.

yah careful you dont take him to parks and stuff until after his injections could catch parvo. happend to one of my pups before and he died

Is it just me, or does it look like DuelElite's puppy's head is kinda see through in that first one?
I'm sure it's just an optical effect from the fur, but it really looks like you can sorta see brain :)

My favourite thing about puppy's is the way that everything http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=30OfaITjSb0is up for attacked, but they're really lame at it. It's just funny.
If you can't be arsed watching them all, just give the last two a go, they're so worth it.
