Does Anyone Here Play Grand Strategy Games?

Played Civ series, AOE and Anno for a time. Got sucked in WC3 a long time ago. Played like 5+ hours/day. Now DOTA2 got me. Fuck that shit.

I watched someone play on Youtube a little bit.

I think my misconception had to do with the micromanagement of moving units. And also with not having done any research to add more buildings and stuff. I think I just needed to let a lot of time pass first.

But I couldn't figure out how to move my units around my own provinces and crap. After watching that kid play on Youtube, it seems like most of it is going to be done through the menu's.

Do I actually choose how to move my units, or do I just declare war and they attack or defend or what? I might just be fundamentally misunderstanding something.

Who are you playing as? To move units around, you simply left click on them in the map and right click where you want them to go. You can do it during peace as well as war.

To build units, click on a province, and in the lower part of the screen in the province info there is a golden button with a sword and a shield. Use that menu to build units.

To merge or split armies, just select them and use the little arrows button in the upper right(?) corner of the army menu.

The Total War series is awesome and I've played every title except the most recent Shogun one. Rome Total War II is due in 2013. It looks fantastic. These video don't really show the strategic map so much as the battles, and there is a fairly strong element of planning, taxation, policy making, etc. but not to the degree of some of the other games mentioned here.

Total war games are the shit. I just wish they would come up with a way to incorporate it into a big MMO.

Rome 2 looks great, BUT, judging by my experience with Shogun 2, you dont really have time to enjoy the graphics cause you will spend most of the battle zoomed out, so that graphics dont look much better than previous total war games

Just got Rome Total War, very easy to play. I'm sure it will be very basic compared to the grand strategy games though. I recon the graphics could really benefit from the update for the new Rome next year. Anyone played Tropico? That looks like a nice lightweight city builder with a twist, which wouldn't eat up too much time. Going to save the grand strategy games for retirement:p

I love games like these; Crusader Kings 2 is the only one I'm playing right now.

I started it in August, as the Count of Dublin, and now my empire has England/Wales/Scotland/Ireland as well as most of France and Denmark.

I just married my son to the younger sister of the King of Russia. As soon as the marriage occurred I assassinated the King of Russia and his only son, causing the wife of my son to now be the Queen of Russia (and my son to be the King of Russia). So as soon as my character dies Russia I'll get to play as my son who will inherit my empire, and control Russia as well. After that I should have enough manpower that I can set my sights on the Holy Roman Empire.

Also CK2 has an amazing Game of Thrones mod. Since CK2 is all intrigue and political maneuvering, Game of Thrones is a perfect fit for it.

For anyone treating themselves for Xmas with some grand strategy

After reading the above post and watching Game Of Thrones season 1 I decided to get Crusader Kings II Collection, it was 75% off yesterday and 50% off ($24.99) today on Steam. 50% off Universalis Chronicles and HOI III collection too today (all Mac/PC), both $14.99 or less for other versions.

Found a good channel on Youtube for CKII introduction tutorials SeeKayEm99's channel - YouTube

Think I must be the only person around who didn't get Total War, everyone seems to rate it 9 or 10. Didn't do anything for me once the awe of the battles wore off (maybe need to give it more of a chance). Tropico was a good alternative to Sim City for a few days.

Kind of on the same level, one of my favorite strategy games:
The Guild 2

The Guild 2 PC Review, The Guild 2 Player Reviews

The Guild 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You can start businesses and it has real time economic models, build stuff, run for office and abuse the privileges to just wreck your opponents and their families.

It's been patched and its awesome...

Get The Guild 2 Renaissance I think that's the latest standalone if it looks interesting to you. I've wasted a long time on the game in the past. It's the only game of its kind I think. Town building, Politics (Lots of offices you can run for and do unique stuff), crime/justice system (you can accuse people of crimes in front of a judge, you can be the judge, or the jury and watch as they carry out the punishments), business sim (supply demand, upgrades, better products, etc), people/life sim (marry, kids, dynasty, traits, upping skills, hiring people to carry out actions, controlling other members of your house).

For example you can be a tavern owner, build up your tavern, learn secrets from drunks about one of your enemies, run for the office that lets you set the severity of the law and set it to severe, with the evidence you have gathered from your tavern plus your spies on one of the opposing dynasty members you can take him to court and argue your case in front of a judge and jury (all of whom you can also bribe before the trial) who because they like you so much more find the defendant guilty and sentence him or her to death because you set the severity of the law to High and then you can watch as they get taken out of the court house and executed.

Or you can run for executioner and watch your character do it him or herself.

Or you can be a robber baron and rob houses and businesses and extort them for protection. Or you can be the leader of a thieves guild and just kidnap and ransom people off for money. Someone accuse you of crimes? Kidnap them and get off when you show up for trial and the accuser doesn't. I think you can be a pirate lord as well but I don't remember that one. Those are in addition to the many other professions/careers like priest, craftsman, etc etc. Even for the craftsman stuff you have to hire people, pay them a fair wage, and manage the supply and demand of the products and materials to make those products and sell them.

That's just some random stuff off the top of my head. I really like the game and not a lot of people have heard of it or have played it but... yeah its pretty great.

Admittedly the Total War series is more about the battles than the strategy map. You got the original Rome though which is at least 8 years old and the series has come a long way since then. They released Medieval II, Empire, Napoleon and Shogun II and I think all have improved the strategic game. Might want to give a more recent title a shot to see how you like it.
