I've already laid out in another thread why China and Russia would leave Iran's ass blowing in the wind if the Israel and/or the US attacked so let me just paraphrase one more time. Iran is worth two things, a buyer of arms from Russia or a supplier of petroleum to China.
A military engagement with Iran leaves Iran's army decimated. Most city infrastructure probably gone. Religious regime toppled. End result... nobody to write checks to Russia anymore. Russia is out.
Wiping out Iran as a political entity has no bearing on the oil under the ground. China sits back and waits for the dust to settle. China is out.
Iran only exists right now to play Russia/China off against the US. Once they overplay their hand, game over, just depends on the rake the house takes before their chips get divied up among those still standing.

I don't think Russia supports Iran because of arms sales. Arms sales make up a tiny portion of revenue compared to Gazprom. Russia supports Iran because Iran stirs shit up and tension in the middle east = higher energy prices which keeps Gazprom revenues high and Putin and pals in power.
Russia does sell some heavy duty shit to Iran (advanced AA missiles and possibly anti-ship sizzlers), but still a good point. Iran plays Russia off against the West and Russia plays Iran off the West right back.
Israel is our Allie. Iran has threatened to wipe them off the face of the world many times. Before long they will have the means to start a nuclear war in the middle east.
