I'm now starting to build some 980px wide layouts, I think it's a great transition to larger layouts because you can stuff the farmost right column with non-vital content so that 800x600 users can still use your site

I do use a 900px layout on big sites, I put less important stuff at the far right though so that the 800x600 users can still get around. On smaller sites with less content I use 768px because I can't find enough stuff to put on the front page.

With Y! deciding to abandon the 8x6 format Ive really started to ignore it a little more. I still like to make sure it doesnt look horrid in the lower resolution, but Im not losing sleep if it doesnt look perfect.

I tend to stick with 800x600 but i think ill move on soon. i think that over 95% of the visitors will use larger resolutions. 1280 is actually getting standard these days.

I am still sticking with 800x600 layouts for most of my sites. If I build a site where I know the target demo is younger then I will go ahead and build it out to 1024 wide. Soon enough I imagine going 2014 for quite a bit of my sites, notice how big sites who have a wide demographic like cnn.com, dell.com etc. have gone to 1024.

Yes Yahoo really made a statement there.

I also love the larger layouts because theres more room for ad banners without making your site look spammy, and there is no difference in CPM payout to wide layouts and narrow layouts as far as I know, so it's just more banners -> more pay -> less adpacked

True, but i still try to make my website as accesable as possible for everyone on the web.

hehe i swithced my monitor back to 800x600, just to try it. It's freaky, and claustrofobic ;)

No shit... people that use it seriously must not know that they can change it. Or they are blind.

Or they live in russia or something, and they just dont have that many new computers. On which 800x600+ resolutions are suported. You shouldn't totally forget about them

Very true... the rest of the world needs to catch up and get some real computers!

Yes and no. My latest site isn't 800x600 friendly but that's only because I need to fit a lot of content and ads in the design.

Hmm that would apply to many many sites, unless you have some special sort of content?

Exactly. Yahoo looks to be usable by the lowest common denominator. If they no longer use this standard, I fail to see why anyone should.
