And I don't mean goals like "make lots of money and retire young." Great goal, but worthless without a path to get there.

Im talking about setting daily and weekly goals. I don't do this on my personal projects (and at work they are done for you) but I think I'm going to start. Basically saying, "Ok, today Im going to write 5 articles, and by the end of the week I will have 25 articles and xx feature added to the site."

I think one of the biggest things that seperates the serious web developer from the amatuer hacker (for personal projects, not client sites) is this kind of self imposed deadline. Im trying to make the transition from the latter to the former and I think setting daily and weekly goals is a good way to start.

i keep a to do list and if i do some thing not on the list i add it after ive done, just to cross it of and make me feel better :D

Haha, so do I. :o

To-do lists are great though, I sit down every morning and make one.

To do lists are great, but on anything I do that requires planning I spend an afternoon setting out a project management plan. Does not mean I stick to it religiously, but at least I know where I need to go to find the end.

I keep a spreadsheet of "to do" stuff but usually it is a lot of small stuf that adds up to a decent goal.

Online project management software like http://basecamphq.com is great if there are a few of you working remotely on the same project.

I know that by a certain time if I dont accomplish a task, I'll be in trouble.
I tried keeping a to do list but then I'd forget to look at it.

So yes, I keep extensive projects / tasks lists.
I also set myself goals in 3 month periods. (That works best for me)
