Do you need to have a website and written content?

Ok, there's something I don't quite understand, from what I have read so far on here, everyone is suggesting starting a site with content, that houses ads. But I've also heard about contextual advertising, which sounds like you buy ads, through something like google ad words, but you don't actually need to have a website, instead your ads will take you to an affiliate link (such as a clickbank product).

So how does this actually work? From what I have seen of adwords so far, I get the feeling that you create ads with keywords, built for your own url/website. So what am I missing?

Personally I just don't want to write content, I'd just rather promote an an affiliate instead.

Also I have a domain that I have had for years (sitting doing nothing) with the term "diet" in it. What would be my best bet for something like this?

What you're missing is action.

You'll learn faster by doing, so go do it.

Some traffic sources allow direct-linking, some don't. I know for a fact Google want content.

Ha clickbank products. I've still yet managed to make a single sale with one of those. I'm starting to think it's all hoaxery.
 
You are describing two opportunities.

1. Find offer > build site around offer > send paid clicks to site
2. Find offer that allows direct-linking and has good content to maintain high QS in adwords (all CB products are 1 page landers = bad) > send paid clicks to affiliate link

I'm currently having success with #2. Finding a good offer kind of takes long and is only a small part of the process. Seeing/testing/optimizing for conversions should be where your main attention is at.
