Digital camera suggestions?

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. Though admittedly I'm still somewhat in the dark as far as what I'll end up going with. I'll most likely get a DSLR, just 'cause I've always wanted one. An old friend of mine had an old fashioned SLR and I always thought it was really cool, so I've always wanted one because of that.

If you end up deciding you want a a point and shoot check out the Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 - bought one in late 2011 and it takes great pic's AND it's cheap now since they are 2011 models.

You just want a fucking new toy, bro- admit it.

Modern cell phone cams like the one in my Razr take better pics than most mid-grade DSLR's out there.

Well, sort of. Honestly I almost never buy anything anymore unless there's some sort of ROI. The only reason I'm looking into getting a camera is because something's come up that I think would make it a worthwhile investment.

... But yes, it would be fun to play with as well :). Take some pretty pictures when I'm on vacation this summer and stuff.

I am particular to Canon the powershots are a great point and shoot.

Picked my main camera up (DLSR) ~3years ago. IN the US, I think it is called the rebel something.

Just look for a good deal / special offer and 500 should be fine.

However, for product photography, get a powershot and invest the rest into a softbox.

You can browse the Flickr "camera finder" and drill down by the most popular types of cameras today and see actual examples of the quality of photos taken -- everything from phone cameras to point-n-shoot to SLR. Literally millions of photos to compare.

Then get a flash (this will put you over the limit of $500, so you might postpone that)

A DSLR is possible at this price. Get one used and adapt a old manual lens such as the takumar 50mm series. But it won't provide you with the comfort of a point and shoot camera. It is also really limiting in terms of focal length, but the results are amazing. A modern alternative would be the aforementioned Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 even though it's "only" f1.4.

I love my Nikon D3200, 24mp, but its got only a penta miror and not a penta prism, the edges are not always good in closeup shots.

I love the iphone camera though. Much better picture quality even in the worst of lighting. and not too many settings to fiddle with when you need to take a quick snap of something.

You don't have to spend so much money on a camera now a days. If you have an android or an iphone, you could mess with the settings and get a very high quality image.

Sony RX100

Massively portable point and shoot with a large 1" sensor that can produce results comparable to low-end SLR's.

Without doubt the best point and shoot option going right now.

Agreed, I seriously considered this one.

Ended up buying an NEX-5R with 18-55 kit lens, bag and 15gb flash drive on sale from Sony for I think $600 in June. I'm absolutely in love with it.

Have since bought the sony 55-210 lens, an Olympus 1.7 tele-extender & step-up ring, Raynox macro converter with step-down ring, and an old mint Minolta 58mm 1.4 prime with adapter. Currently looking for an ultra wide angle prime and/or good fisheye converter.

The secret's pretty much out now that the new mirrorless cameras can take old lenses with a simple $10 adapter. Prices are slowly going up as more and more people buy these smaller interchangeable lens bodies and seek out old lenses for cheap. :/
