is there a way to detect if the user has a flash plugin without using java/script? if they dont i want to redirect them to a basic page.

Why not direct them to the basic page by default, and embed on that page a SWF redirect to your Flash-enabled site?

but that really only works for internet explorer which should be fine since firefox will automatically prompt them to install it if they don't have it.
