Is this some crazy adsense or what! I don't think I've ever seen a more devious implementation.

I'm really wondering if they contacted Google about it, though...

Do you have any examples of similar craziness ?

This is common practice in the Media site industry. Users tend to click on thumbnails without reading descriptions.
