how much do you think site design plays in getting a sale -
my GF was looking to buy online and found a really cheap price on a crap looking site - i told her not to bother - and i based my decision on how bad the site looked
so i think it must play a big part in getting a sale

Well, if you have some design skills and that site has good content and traffic, then maybe it'd be a fixer-upper for you.

One of my CRAPPIEST looking sites (and I am talking REALLY crappy) still maked the occasional affiliate sale because it gets very taregeted search engine traffic. Nothing great mind you, and I am sure I could improve conversions, but still it's damn ugly. I only put it up to test out some SEO theories and wasn't actually expecting it to make any sales but it did.

no she was going to buy a product online - but the site looked so awful I couldn’t be bothered to check if it was a scammer or not - it looked like the site was made in 1981 and I also thought they may not be in business anymore:D

I think looks matter more for experienceds users.
Crap sites still make sales, and mediocre looking ones often do great.

crap sites for adsense? why not have a good/quality site for adsense?

I think alot of people have the theory that the worse the site looks the more likely the visitor will just click something to get the hell away. And if the Google Ads are prominent then odds are they'll click one of those.

nothing like obscure thinking

me. if i wanted to click something that badly to get away from a bad site, it sure as hell wouldnt be a link on the site itself it would either be the home button on the browser or the big red X in the top right hand corner

Just like PORNO SITES, there's LITTLE correlation between how NICE a site looks and how well it converts. Applies to adult as well as mainstream.

Watch out....... I'm working on a tool that will help this become EASIER :D :D

You are working on a tool that will make what easier?

- Design crappy websites.
- Determine if a site is crappy looking?
- Get a better conversion rate?

I think that a lot of people confuse a bland, or plain looking site without "design blingbling" with "crappy looking". Bland and plain often also mean

- focus on the content
- easy to access
- clean code (less code overhang for design)

No wonder these make sales.

emp nailed it :D

my 2 cents: no one, except the webmaster and designer, care what a site looks like, within reason.

I'm working on software that will take the guesswork out of website/landing page conversions. It was harder than I anticipated. Thank goodness for outsourcing for reducing the R & D costs :D
