The more you look into these exotic pets, the more you realize just how good of a pet dogs and cats are. I mean they are mini wolves/tigers, we tend to forget that. That's pretty fucking sweet when you really think about it.

A smelly ferret? A monkey that requires as much attention as a kid? Boring ass fish? A fucking duck? Naaaaa...

Cats and dogs have been domesticated for a really long time, which makes them a little easier to deal with. A lot of more exotic pets are just a generation or two removed from the wild, so they can be a little unpredictable.

The other thing about cats and dogs, though, is that they're familiar enough that most of us don't think about the things that make them difficult or gross. If you have a cat, you pretty much have to keep a box of poop in your home. You deal with scratching. Nearly every surface in your home is walked on by an animal that walks through a box of its own feces. It's a little gross, if you let yourself think about it - but it's normal.

Dogs can get pretty smelly, and they either need a good outdoor space or frequent (and time-consuming) walks. They want your attention all the time. Some of them have barking issues. You can't randomly leave for a weekend trip and just make a giant pile of food and water like you can with a cat. Some of them need to have their anal glands expressed.

They all have pros and cons - it's just a matter of figuring out what you want and what you're willing to overlook.

Forget cats, dogs, birds, fish. I picked up one of these as a pet last year, ordered direct from Russia.

Depends on your living situation. If you're in a condo, get a dog. If you're in a condo with a rodent problem, get a cat.

If you live in a house w/ some property, be a baws and micropig it

They get to be about as big as a mid-sized dog & they're smart as fuck so you gotta be able to handle that.

You forgot the best part. When they die, it's not all doom and gloom because...

Uh, no, not if you're a responsible pet owner and care about the hygiene in your home.

You deal with scratching.

Once again, no, not if you provide them with stuff that's their's to scratch, posts, mats, and the like, and train them. Oh, and keep their claws trimmed.

Nearly every surface in your home is walked on by an animal that walks through a box of its own feces.

We scoop the cat box nearly every single time the cat takes a crap in it and change it twice weekly. Occasionally we miss one, so there's a second turd in there, but the cat is hardly walking through piles of its own shit. It's not difficult to do, and for us it's more about the smell than anything else.

I'm not saying the issues are insurmountable, just that they're issues some people wouldn't want to deal with (and a lot of people don't think about it because cats are so common). Yeah, hygiene does vary depending on how many cats there are and how often the box is scooped. Even if you're watching the cat and scooping every time they use the box, though, it's still not exactly a "clean" place. There's also liquid waste...

Scratching can be curbed, too, but again, it just depends on if the human is willing to do what it takes. SoftPaws help a lot, too.

Don't get me wrong - I like cats (and most pets in general). I'm just pointing out that if we weren't so accustomed to the routines associated with owning a cat or dog, they might seem kind of unpleasant, too.
