Classical music, anyone?

very nice!

I'm not sure what is actually classical music. Is it something from period of man with funny wigs, is it instrument related or something that requires conductor and orchestra? Sorry if I seem stupid :)

Anyway, few composers come to my mind right now, most of the stuff was used for soundtracks in some good movies.

Klaus Doldinger - Das Boot

Ennio Morricone - Main Titles (A Fistful Of Dollars) . Plenty other good stuff from him, but I will restrain on one per composer

John Williams - Memoirs of a Geisha Soundtrack

Wagner - The Ride of the Valkyries (makes me want to scream "fuck your mother" at anyone who i'm mad at)

Edvard Grieg - In the Hall of the Mountain King ( I like this how it speeds up and gets all aggressive, it's like nine inch nails of that time, fuck yeah. Know any more of these kind papajohn?)

Adam Khachaturian - Sabre Dance (very lively song)

Nice selection there, fixie.

If you can only listen to one of these, let it be the first, the Alchemical Journey. :liebe028:

You don't have to be a classical hipster and dig super deep to find incredible stuff. Beethoven's 9th Symphony ("Ode to Joy") is a brilliantly written piece of music.

I mainly listen to classical music. And when I'm not I listen to Rap and Techno, so I'm not a pretentious prick and I don't think you need to be to love it. (ok maybe a bit.)

Beethoven, Bach, Wagner, Brahms, Mozart, Liszt, Stravinsky, etc, etc...

But these days I am more and more into modern/different stuff (I'm sorry but there's only so much beethoven/mozart style stuff I can listen to, and it's only the tip of the iceberg of great "classical" music that is out there to discover) Also especially into some great sound track music from movies like Downfall, The Fountain, and Memento. Three of the best modern soundtracks (and great movies) in my opinion.

And also there is this guy called Arvo Part, very minimal classical, much of it takes inspiration from more sacred music like Palestrina and de Prez...

Also liking Alan Hovhaness more and more these days. Very simple pre-classical style melodies but with lush modern orchestration. Very simple but the melodies just keep developing... some very strange turns of melody too, and very eastern sounding at times... cool stuff... I can see why a lot of people discount Hovhaness, but he's been growing on me the more I listen

Sorry for all the videos! Enjoy

I don't know if you'd call this Classical music, but I love E.S. Posthumus:

I'd be next to reiterate that I am not completely aware with this genre as much as you guys are. I used to listen to some classical back in the days - this taste gradually evolved to the Trance genre.

These are two of my favorite pieces of music -

The first is Silentium. It is so subtle and so beautiful, it works beautifully whenever I am hyper.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FK-KC2aQpcI]Arvo Pärt - Silentium - YouTube[/ame]

Another one is Magnificat - what a stunning piece of music. It's just so perfect.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A6BfyhFSVQ]Arvo Part - Magnificat - YouTube[/ame]

And then there's the eternal Carl Off - O Fortuna - most people would remember this from the Old Spice ad - but this music is way beyond it!

I've always quite liked it, but got really interested in it again after playing Empire & Napoleon Total War. Been listening to BBC Radio 3 a lot recently:

My current favourite (got this on my mobile phone alarm to wake me in the morning):

Big fan of Russian stuff like Mussorgsky

& Rimsky-Korsakov:

Also like Wagner:

If you want to learn more about Classical, I really recommend Radio 3:

BBC iPlayer - Listen live - BBC Radio 3

They have a lot of great classical, and they also do loads of programmes where they talk about the composers, the way the music was written etc. Being a history geek, I find the circumstances the composers wrote the music in really interesting.

Finally... I wonder if this will be considered classical in years to come (whatever, it's awesome):

Oh! And I almost forgot - Yanni is a super favorite. His contemporary classical style is spell bounding. The below video always cheers me up. The smile on the faces of those musicians, the thrill and the enthusiasm, it's just amazing.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLTAQ4nc05I]Yanni "World Dance" (Full HD) - YouTube[/ame]

P.S - I have posted 4 videos in this thread. I know Arvo Part for sure is Classical, but am not sure on O Fortuna and World Dance (Though Yanni's style is generally Contemporary Classical.)

So, if am polluting this thread with useless crap, please point that out and I'll GTFO. I know how possessive fans can be with their music. #justsayin
