bum marketing works, like everything else it reflects the effort you put into it.
part of my diversity is set into bum marketing, although much less than other areas i focus on. it doesnt pull, and over time with enough well written article it can be come residual.
I'm not the biggest fan of bum marketing. I think it's too risky to put a lot of work into building traffic directly to an affiliate link.
What I do is just use the articles to build keyword rich links (for SEO) to a more general site that can build optins and keep that traffic better.

Bum marketing can definitely pay off, but its quite hit or miss until you get the hang of it. Once you get it down and learn how to write articles that get people to click and that rank high in the SERPs, it is much more profitable. One major benefit of bum/article marketing is that you get hundreds of words to sell your affiliate offer, compared to just a few lines, like with PPC. Combine good articles with a simple landing page and you can make some decent cash.
One tip, if you are outsourcing your articles, remember, you get what you pay for. Cheap writers will usually come up with some shitty ass articles that aren't going to sell your offer.. so if you can, take the time and write some good articles that are tailored to your offer, and if you get a successful article, re-write it like 10 times.

battman323, that's exactly how I've done it.
One of the major strengths of bum marketing (especially if you can write write a motivating, entertaining, or persuasive style) is that you can use it to truly grab the reader. Not just the random tripe that you see at ezinearticles. But, really grab their eyeballs and get their attention. Then, you drive 'em to your site and you control the relationship by getting them on your list.
Once you control the relationship and continue to write to your list in a way that motivates, entertains, or persuades them, you can drive an enormous ROI from your efforts.
There's a lot of opportunity in taking the bum marketing process, tweaking it and applying it in creative ways. It's a little more work, but can be a lot more profitable.
