"I don't have MANY big sites"
I have tons of sites, but all of them are mini sites linking to my few main sites.. and some database type sites, tons of recipe, quotes, lyrics, videos and images sites.. again for reinforcing the Big sites..
And yes.. 1000 is just a number. It can be 30X10, 50 X 10.. But you get the Idea? I spend my resources only when I am confident I can target 100 Pages.. Also you need to worry about the first layer of content of 100 pages..
Read again. The second layer don't even target keywords.. And can be churned out by the dozens everyday by an experienced Indian/Philippino writer..
RIght now I am working on one new Project. started 2011. And am not even done.. It is still marinating..
It will have 300X10.. Currently working on the 300.. Almost done with about 260ish pages of content, 800-1000 words each)..
The 3000 Sub pages are not that difficult for these... Like I said, they are not landing pages. Being created by 2 VAs now. Will add one more. But they make their 300 parent pages extremely Authority... This is what I said --> I first see if I can create a multi-tier site from this niche easily, before choosing a niche.. Easily, as in by just spending money.. Some niche need experts..Medicine for eg.. I Need to deliver quality... Quality means content that match what the searcher is looking for..
Another surprise for you... I am also working one two more sites. similar sites. Same Niche. 100X10 each.. All 100 articles for each sites already written and posted. ( I used two Native writers, UK and US, from WF)
I will go slow on the second tier articles for these..
They both have different servers, monetization ids etc.
But their main purpose is supporting the first site. So..yes... you need to invest in content or write it yourself. And yes, these 2 sites are already profitable... That is why I went for 300 target pages on the main site, because I know this can be dominated. I may also let one of these two sites compete with the main site.
And I am only warming up. Because I have planned to launch at least 15 related sites... to reinforce these sites.. 4-5 articles already slapped on those sites... Nearly 200 Mini Sites have been registered... Secret Agent Dad ran a cycle on his tool with my main keyword as the seed.. They will all reinforce the 300 target pages..
I already own some other Niches. I am out to dominate this new one..
And I have a lot of patience..

Then I thought I will use them for the mini sites as they were damn good rankers.. And I wanted to make my minis also look Authoritative..

Now, 1 question: With so many fatass sites interlinking, how are you handling these IPs? Each big site separately hosted with different C class IP?
Great strategy overall. You know that Micro Niche sites have a benefit or two that your bigguns don't have (like lots of EMD bonuses & lower content costs) but I think it probably balances out because you get lots of extra Link Juice as your bonus. If only there were some way to combine the two strats... hmm...

My interlinking strategy would take up a whole post. And it's been working for a while, so I don't want to post the whole thing and let service providers spoil it for everyone lol.
1) If I use the same Adsense ID, I interlink on same hosts without any worry. Google knows they are the network anyway. I don't act like I am trying to game Google. I let any reviewer know that I just happen to have multiple sites on the same Niche... Monster.com has 1000's of niche Jobs sites.. Why can't I? eh? The idea is to not make google look stupid. So I make very good quality Mini/medi Sites.. I have used Core Content Club with great success.
2) Multiple C class interlinking is only one way. Secondary sites to primary site. All different hosts... Good thing about Big sites is that they all need at least a big VPS themselves.. so they are pretty distanced by themselves on the IP front... And these sites come in handy for 3 Way...too
So NO same IP three way.. ever..
3) About mini sites, I also deploy a lot of it... But all in my niche... Same niche, because to me, the linking power is more valuable than the revenue.. I even tried my hands on doing non-related stuff... but they are a time suck and distract me from my projects.. I have a couple hundred domains that are not from my main niche.. Planning to finish them all, rank them and then sell off... Damn You Clyde...
I still have a method to rank Mini Sites... BooYaa.. and I will take it to my grave...

I spent 2000 bucks on a custom theme for one of my sites, and I ended up not liking it so badly. I thought I like her other designs... Maybe I don't have good imagination... I also love simplicity... so I couldn't give her a give description.... I still use it, but no better than some of the other free of 60-70 dollar themes..
I have a few free theme and paid themes that I love.. Of course I customize the presentation.. But not so much.. I have never met a designer that I realllly like. I have a very close friend who is a good designer.. I give him Logo jobs.. and he design great websites.. but I don't know. I don't trust him to a whole skin lol.. Maybe I will try to have a custom thesis theme...
I also avoid header..
Just the logo, and white space to the right where I either put a Google custom search or feed buttons...
I keep them as simple as possible...
I have horrible sense of color... and design... so I can't even express what I want..
Sometimes, I have asked a designer to clone some other sites (not exact clone lol)... but that's it..
When you say main pages and sub pages, do you mean something like:
Main page: blue widgets
Sub page: where to buy blue widgets
etc?
Main page: blue widgets
Sub page: where to buy blue widgets
etc?
Simple example:
Main Page: Lil Wayne Lyrics...
Sub page: All the Lyrics...
This example is more apt, as I explained that I don't worry a lot about the bottom level 1000 Pages...
Now Lyrics would be damn tough nut to crack as you are 15 years too late, but you get the Idea...
Just as your offsite SEO are your Top Level Support.
You need a Bottom level support with these pages..
Every page should be a reference of several sub pages... That is how I look at it...
Now you can apply this to a lot of things..
Like a Travel site.. with a single page for every destination in a region?
But one of the key factor for raking for each page will the Sub pages of that page.. Things to do, Hotels, Eateries, deals and such...
You can even be more ambitious and compete with lonely planet
But then you have tens of thousands of pages to deal with individually...
Whereas I deal with 100-500 pages max.
