I was recommended a pretty baller accountant by Berto over here and it looks like I'll be switching over. Overall my previous accountant was a good one, never really messed anything up and we were good buds, but he just doesn't have the "edge" that this new guy sounds like he has. What's the best way to break the news that I'm moving on?

"Hello?"
"Hi"
"Whatsup, need more accounting?"
"Neg, I'm switching to a more powerful accountant."
"Oh, okay... can I still play with your numb.."
"No, Bye."

ohai, I got recommended this accountant who specialises in affiliate marketing, so I think he may be more suited to my specific needs. Hope that's not a problem. Cheers!

You: Listen, I want to talk to you about something.
Him: Sure, what is it?! I've almost completed your 2010 tax return by the way!
You: About that...
Him: There's somebody else, isn't there...?
You: It's not you, it's me.
Him: Who is it?
You: I met him through my friend Berto on WF, the gay webmaster forum.
Him: So how long has this been going on?
You: A few weeks now. It's almost April after all.
Him: [Sob, sob...]
You: He can do things I never thought possible, things you never wanted to do. You should see the size of his refund, I mean it's huge.

Or, you could just say something along the lines of "I won't be working with you anymore."

If you had a good accountant, he's making a lot of money and doesn't need your business.

Here's the best, realistic advice: LIE. Tell him your cousin just became a CPA and needs some business or something like that -- family comes first. This way, if you guys are butt buddies, you can still get it in. You dig?

This is why it's best to not be friends with people that you're paying to do shit for you. You shouldn't feel attached to somebody doing a service for you. Good luck though! Definitely wanna see updates as to what you say/his reaction ;).

Worst advice ever. Who actually advocates lying, about anything, to a business partner -- on top of that, one you expect to stay friends with? Not to mention this guy knows your bank accounts, social security, tax id, etc. Not somebody I'd want as an enemy. I know you're only half way serious, but still...

Shit, you're right man -- the truth will set you freeeeeeeeeee.

But I'm not sure if you're serious -- do you really consider your accountant your business partner?

Semantics...call him whatever you want. Lying about something like this is pretty immature, and just stupid.

Note to self: never do business with CPATrend.com

Do you also lie to your affiliates when an advertiser wants to cut off a publisher?

Not quite sure I follow. Do I lie to my affiliates when an advertiser wants to cut off that affiliate? No, I tell them that the advertiser had X issues with their traffic, send over a lead report, and pause them on the offer.

???

This is why you don't to business with "good buds", or become "good buds" with business associates.

Just be professional and courteous about it.

Hey man, I no longer need your services, but it was a pleasure working with you, if you ever need a reference for anything, I'd be happy to help.

Something along those lines. After all, it's just business at the end of the day.

Whenever somebody lies to me about anything no matter how small, and I know about it, I immediately lose all trust in that person. Just like when a network owner advocates lying, about anything no matter how insignificant, on a forum -- I lose all trust in that network.

Don't worry, you're not losing any business by not having me as an affiliate, just saying... :)

In response to the OP, your first thought is to lie. That says a lot about your character. If you find it necessary to lie about such insignificant things, chances are you will definitely lie when there is actually something at stake.

I'm not worried, I'll live lol.

And regardless, you're reading way too deeply into it. The reason I said lie and say you have family doing it is to spare the accountant guy his dignity of his client switching to somebody better because of the fact that BluAffiliate became friends with him.

But if you think that a casual white lie to spare somebody's feelings makes me a malicious person with bad intentions, hey -- you have a right to your opinion.

If he is intelligent, tell him straight up your using someone else who is better suited for your business.

him being intelligent will understand, and possible use that oppurtunity to learn more about what he could do for you and use that knowledge to further his business.

I've considered lying, telling him I moved or something but it seems so underhanded. Best advice so far in this thread has been telling them that I found someone who specializes in affiliate marketing.

Then again, he might be offended less if I told him I left the country. Decisions decisions.

So then you're not really friends with him, you guys just have friendly conversation when he's doing your taxes?

Break the news just like you posted it. If your current accountant cares about building his business, he'll appreciate the feedback. Or, he'll realize your account wasn't a good fit for his conservative practice.

Everyone wins in the long run. :)

You should know his personality by now and the proper approach to take.

This.

I'm sort of in the same boat, I'm with the accountant who does my parents paperwork & he's never really done accounting for someone who does online stuff.

Regardless, he's still going to try and save me a lot of money but it's sorta awkward telling the fam accountant you're going to use someone else.
