Best way to learn code

I said "web app" ... not website / SaaS solution.

Web app, as in I can download a tarball, which is ready-to-go, and install it on my own server / site.

So you wouldn't define any of the stuff we listed as web apps? Because literally the rest of the world does.

What you listed as examples were self hosted CMS platforms. A CMS is a web app but a web app isn't necessarily a CMS.

Kiopa_Matt's posts are like a portal to the losts land of Myopia.

It wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't the most vocal, persistent poster in this dead subforum.

Someone needs to rename this place "Kiopa_Matt's stream of consciousness, a fountain of thoughts that haven't change since 1998 since the only tech news he reads is the Perl mailing list which died in 1998".

Just playing, bro. Fight the fight against these hipsters.

Only one problem with this. Recently had a devel competition here... mattseh backed out because he was moving, and dchuk didn't even finish, because apparently he was in learning mode that day. :)

I'm the only one who presented something you could have passed off to a client and web designer, and said, "here's your fully, ready-to-go SaaS solution". Without question, I had nowhere near the best UI, and I think that one goes to sumarh0xor, but the functionality was there.

Oh well, fuck it. Keep your eye on the BST section. Within 48 hours there'll be a thread from me. ;)

I couldn't find a download link for your RSS app, did you release it?

Sure, you can download it here:

Envrin CMS - Free, commercial grade account management software.

No idea why anyone would want it, but if you want the RSS package, just drop me a PM with the e-mail you signed up with, and I'll add it to your license. It's one click to install via the Maintenance->Package Manager menu of the admin panel.

Now I just can't wait for either you or dchuk to show me something comparable that you've developed and launched. :)

I grabbed the installer php file, it's ioncube encoded. mmm.

Yep, the entire software is encoded via ionCube. I'll offer high-end software for free, but I want those service contracts. That's the catch. You get the software for free, but all modifications go through me / my company. If this goes well, I'll be setting up an office in Chiang Mai shortly, and will begin getting a team in place.

Anyway, still smoothing over and testing, so my apologies in advance for any errors that occur.

I'm lost.

Did you write the WF fun-and-games code-with-the-bros RSS app as a plugin to your proprietary company CMS?

Yes. We were allowed to use anything that was at our disposal. That was at my disposal. That's why I'm the only one who presented something that could be passed off to a client.

That, and dchuk and mattseh have constantly made snide remarks towards me, so I wanted them to see the infrastructure in action. Now maybe, just maybe, they'll shut the hell up with their snide remarks. :)

I'm rewriting the serpIQ frontend right now with Angular, it's coming along very nicely and is extremely performant so far. Once that is launched I'll take another stab at one of these RSS readers again.

Pretty sure we all agreed to release our source code for others to read and see how we accomplished the task, there was no mention of encoding anything...

Snide Remark: If my software had the design yours did, I'd never pass it off to a client.

Comes from a guy who participated, but didn't even finish. And no, I said all along I'm not releasing the full code. I'll release the RSS package code, but not the rest.

No shit. I tell that to every client. I'm the guy who makes things work correctly, but can't make them look pretty. Theme library should be live within a week, and I'll see what I can do to get some good designers aboard. It'll become one click to install different themes. You can integrate any site into there. For example, envrin.com took me about 15 mins to integrate.

The design of the admin panel is just fine, but I agree, the design of the public site and member's area sucks. It's supposed to. I made them extremely simple and minimal, so designers can easily see the various elements, integrate their own sites, and release their own designs.

heh, after all this, you're still not going to give credit where it's due, eh? Let's see something comparable that you've developed then.

I'll get what I did on github this week for you to peruse. All of the code, as was agreed on.

It's 2013 man, you can buy beautiful themes for pennies on the dollar (even with multi use licenses), you can find UI packs for cheap, you can browse dribbble.com and beg/borrow/steal ideas...There's really no excuse for poor design at this point, even from the most devvy of developers.

And I've built many things that are pretty snazzy, here's the refresh of serpIQ that's launching next month:

Now of course, I didn't develop my CMS with my own IDE all stored in my own version control because I'm 1) not a masochist and 2) humble enough to admit other people are better coders than me and maybe I should reuse their code and build on top of good standards than reinvent every single wheel I work with in life.

To each his own.

You dumb shit. It doesn't matter what default theme I put on the software for the public site, absolutely nobody is going to use it. Same as nobody uses the default Wordpress theme.

It's not supposed to look nice. Go look at the source HTML, and it's about 60 line, with very minimalistic CSS. There's a reason for that -- so web designers can easily see the structure of themes and required CSS elements. I'm not going to make their job 20 times harder by implementing some complex theme as the default, because nobody is going to use the default theme anyway.

After all the shit you've dished out to me, you still can't even just say "looks good", eh? You're now officially an asshole in my book.
