Where is the best place to hire somebody who is highly proficient in php and mysql? Anyone ever try odesk.com? If so, is that service any good? What do you recommend?

I want somewhere where it you set the price (one-time fee - no hourly rate), and where you don't have to post your requirements publicly.

You mean like, private ?

I would suggest you ask jon where he hired the coders for the new WF directory and stay the fuck away from that place.

Places like rent-a-uselesscoder.com and efuckedlancer.com will provide you with the kind of coders where you will most definitely get exactly what you pay for in quality.

By far the best way to hire legit coders is the advertise on places like joelonsoftware or techcrunch.

Alternatively, if you need someone that can barely managed to piece together cut-n-paste scraps of code to get you roughly what you need, I would urge you to try the rentacoder/elancer type places. Or even odesk.com, which I've heard have been fairly useful for grunt/shitware type development.

I've had nothing but great experience with getting coders at rentacoder and more recently getafreelancer. It's not rocket surgery... I got a custom php script done at getafreelancer and an activex module done at rentacoder. I wasn't happy with the paid forum posting service I got at getafreelancer, but as far as coding I'm happy.

I tried oDesk - not that impressed. Interface is ok, but very slow, and the talent there is lacking. As EFUT EFUTURE said, you get what you pay for. To get a good programmer, ask around. To get a cheap one, go to oDesk, but be prepared for months of frustration ahead.

EFUT hit the nail on the head. Don't hire the cheapest guy. Go to any of these freelancing sites, and look at the coder's feedback from previous jobs. Get a COMPLETE requirements document together. That way, if all of your requirements are not met, you have documented proof so your money will be safe. Verify that the coder communicates sufficiently if your project will require a channel of communication.
