What work do you need done?

If you're after quality design/code then go direct to them - have a search on Twitter, dribbble & Forrst.

If you're after cheap third world labour, then by all means use a bidding site.
 
Regarding Freelancer.com: They have the most whiny bitch ass outsourcers!
I wanted a adult themed video intro made and they banned me from the fucking site with all the complaints from the project bidders.

Good service if you can research all the reviews... but don't attempt to bend the rules there. You'll get someones panties in a wad.
 
I find that these sites are good but you will have some that do a good job and others that suck. You really need to give a few guys with a decent rating a chance and see which one you work with best.

I also don't find it very cheap. If you go for very cheap guys you will get exactly that kind of work in return. It also helps if you have the skill your looking for to weed out the crap.

You'll get a lot of "hello sir, we are the best firm in the world for doing your project". Yet really they most likely suck.

Elance has proven for me to be by far the best for more 'difficult' tasks such as design and programming. I've found ODesk to be of equal quality, while far lower prices, for lower end services like link building etc. Also, ODesk seems to have some excellent translation services for whatever reason, and tends to be pretty good, though somewhat hit and miss, for web development work
 
They're more or less all the same. You get out of them the amount you put in. You need to post up a complete and detailed job spec beyond "we need a website built" and you need to properly vet the candidates on any of them. In the end it's still a trial and error process finding quality prospects and it's very much a you get what you pay for scenario. I've learned that last part the hard way as have others here. Expect cheap fast and good, and you might as well burn your money. It's not going to end well in most cases.

Edit: I've yet to find a competent Indian dev team and I've tried 6 or 7 now. Never again.
