Berkley High to cut science labs because only white students excel in them...

I think Hawking has done more to popularize it, as well as Einstein. I know the correlation, but he's still a douchebag. Unless you're talking about "Contact" for popularization specifically, but I really don't think he did as much as some others.

No you don't "know" the correlation, and you obviously know nothing of Sagan's accomplishments and works.

Hawking and Einstein brought attention to their fields BECAUSE of their achievements.

Sagan dedicated his life TO popularizing science, WHILE being a scientist.

Notable Popularizers of Science - Wikipedia

See Einstein anywhere on that list? No.

Hawking is just there because he wrote 2 science books, which only the top 1% of laymen could fully grasp.

Let's see what Carl Sagan did,

He is world-famous for writing popular science books and for co-writing and presenting the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which has been seen by more than 500 million people in over 60 countries - making it the most widely watched PBS program in history.[2] A book to accompany the program was also published. He also wrote the novel Contact, the basis for the 1997 film of the same name. During his lifetime, Sagan published more than 600 scientific papers and popular articles and was author, co-author, or editor of more than 20 books. In his works, he frequently advocated skeptical inquiry, secular humanism, and the scientific method.

Well where does that leave us now... let's see what the definition of 'douche' is,

"a word to describe an individual who has shown themself to be very brainless in one way or another"

You might know how to incorporate a business, but do yourself a favor and hold your useless opinions regarding men of science whom you know nothing of.

I believe racism will always exist. Certain forms of strife seem to be inherent to us humans as species. If it's not whites hating blacks, then it's blacks hating blacks! If it's not Chinese hating blacks, then Chinese hating Chinese, Muslims hating Jews, Muslims hating Muslims or me hating my neighbor's cat for waking me up at 6am this morning  -- long story short; it's part of humanity.

As a person, you could either get drawn into the spiral and possibly never find anything satisfactory [which again leads to anger, hate, and finally more suffering] ...

OR you could just not get obsessed with the hype, live as pure and honest as possible to friends and family and support extended persons in need no matter their ethnicity/beliefs. To myself, this is the path with most inner peace. To those around me... if they appreciate it; awesome. If not; I tried and I move on.

My conviction regarding human relations is best summed up by The_Mentor --

This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.
PS; I'm black! [hoho!]

lol. yeah man I'm getting a Ph.D in physics, and know nothing about the background or the people who brought it to light to the masses. 'Douche' means he acts like an asshole, and in fact was one to colleagues - have you ever worked with anyone who collaborated on a paper with him, or was a student of his? Because I have. They spoke highly of his knowledge, but he was a prick. Where did I ever say he didn't know what he's talking about?

Cosmos? Yes, that was a good series, and it did a lot in the 1980s. On the other hand, the best way science has been popularized? Taking farfetched (yet real theories) concepts from science and using them in film, television, and novels. REAL science; but even pseudoscience can make some people dig deeper if it's an interesting subject. How about even in commercials? "It's quantum ****ing mechanics!"

You're saying his 600+ scientific papers are an accomplishment for popularization? Scientific papers aren't read by laymen. Do you think someone who might watch something on TV about space with a casual interest is really going to necessarily dive into astrophysical peer-reviewed journals that require study in physics just to understand? Seriously?

Science fiction has done more to popularize science and generate interest than anything, it's a "gateway drug" to real science. Isaac Asimov has done more for popularizing science than Sagan. Know what else popularized science? The atomic bomb. Feynman was a powerful force as well.

Hawking's books have been turned into picture books even, so not only the top 1% of laymen can understand them. Heard of "The Illustrated Brief History of Time"? The concepts of MWI, string theory, and quantum theories are so far out, that it makes people want to look into them when they hear about it.

Yeah, I know "nothing" of this subject, totally. "beeellions and beeellions" of grains of sand in your vagina. And stop relying on Urban Dictionary, holy shit.

Exactly.

I actually agree with the culture thing mentioned above. Those who only see violence, crime, and drugs are going to most likely do nothing but those (Unless they have a positive influence outside of those). Do you really think these kids would go to the library and pick up a business book?

This reminds me of a segment on 60 Minutes the other Sunday about a school in Harlem that taught some of the roughest kids out there and something like 80% of kids go on to college. The kids learn the culture and ethics they need in order to succeed even though when they get home it may not be the best.

Obama liked the school and tried to copy it on a public scale with millions more for their budget. They still can't even come close to the success of the Harlem school though. Why? Because the principal is just another person on the payroll, for the owner of the Harlem school this is his life, just like with most private schools, he feels that if the school fails he fails.

This is what we need - but will never see happen.

That's a *pretty* dumb thing to say. But I guess you're right, my friend's dad raised my best friend to be slingin yay by the corner at 5am (the sad thing is that you probably belive this).

Idiot, think economic class first THEN culture. Like I said, there's a stronger correlation between income bracket and crime than between culture and crime.

This is also assuming that african american culture is homogeneous, another absurd statement.

Racist prick.

You're a racist prick for assuming that he's a racist prick. Reverse racism FTL as usual.

You're pointing out to look at economic class before culture, but what sets the economic class? The culture.

Threads like these tend to bring out dumbasses like this one.

They are eliminating certain classes because there's not enough non-whites.

By that same logic, you could eliminate other school activities, such as sports, because there's not enough non-blacks. Of course that entire line of thinking is retarded, but the school officials are the ones who have begun implementing it.

I agree, that form of thinking is retarded either way. I was just stating that the poster was a dumbass for aggravating the situation further.

Well considering that the 1st result is a vaginal douche, and the second urban dictionary, + the fact that English isn't my native language nor have I ever used the word 'douche' in real life - I think I can be pardoned for relying on urban dictionary for a forum conversation.

I couldn't care less if he was a prick, whoever he was a prick to doesn't matter in the end. The results are what matters, he was intelligent and focused throughout his life. He was still writing a papers for NASA while receiving bone marrow transplants to his last breath. Doctors taking care of him said they never saw anything like it, usually the procedure is so painful that the patients drug themselves to a comatose state.

Well, we're both taking words out of each others mouths now. I didn't say best, I said one of the best popularizers of science overall, his life as a whole. Faraday comes to mind also, maybe he was a douche(you're meaning) also, what does that matter? It doesn't, because 99.999% of people will never know, nor care. Your colleagues were offended by him, big whoop. Doesn't change the price of rice in China or does it affect his accomplishments.

You're saying his 600+ scientific papers are an accomplishment for popularization? Scientific papers aren't read by laymen. I still thought you were referring to douche as an idiot, that's why I quoted the whole block with that info. I agree that papers don't do much as far as popularization.

Science fiction has done more to popularize science and generate interest than anything, it's a "gateway drug" to real science. Isaac Asimov has done more for popularizing science than Sagan. Know what else popularized science? The atomic bomb. Feynman was a powerful force as well.

Agreed, but the gateway has to lead to a natural next step. Carl Sagan's books accomplished this very well. Feynman was a great character too, but not the topic of conversation at the moment.

Hawking's books have been turned into picture books even, so not only the top 1% of laymen can understand them. Heard of "The Illustrated Brief History of Time"? The concepts of MWI, string theory, and quantum theories are so far out, that it makes people want to look into them when they hear about it.

I read both, the pictures are pointless. It's as if someone outsourced the book to some 3rd world country and said attach pretty pictures at every 3rd page that embody some small element, but in the end generating nothing as far as explanatory value.

Yeah, I know "nothing" of this subject, totally. "beeellions and beeellions" of grains of sand in your vagina. And stop relying on Urban Dictionary, holy shit.

I wouldn't of replied if I knew you were attacking his character as opposed to his intelligence.

p.s. I only have a million grains of sand in there.
