Recently played through BG1 with a ton of mods installed. It made me remember that 90% of the game consists of pointless walking and sidequests. BG2 is much more fun, though, and I'm going to import the character with all the stat-boosting tomes applied.

I'm playing BG1 imported into the BG2 engine. That means all of the BG2 kits are available. I'm playing a Kensai, which was really rough at first. But he started to become surprisingly powerful after a few levels. Just had to play carefully and utilize AC-boosting potions for difficult fights. Once I get this kensai into BG2, I'll hit level 13 then dual class to thief. It won't take long to get the kensai powers back since thief exp per level requirements are very low.
Why kensai/thief? It's all about the kai backstabs. (The kensai's kai ability allows you to strike for maximum damage rolls for a round, which means your backstabs hit for the highest damage possible.) Staff is the only 2h melee weapon that you can backstab with, so I am using that. There are actually 2 incredible backstab staves in late BG2. First if the Rod of the Magi, which a thief can use if they have the Use Any Item ability. It allows you to repeatedly turn invisible just by equipping it, allowing you to do an infinite number of backstabs with no risk. That is just TOO powerful, so I installed a mod that removes the automatic invisibility from the staff and turned it into an ability with a few charges per day. The other staff is the Staff of the Ram +6, which does bonus piercing damage and has a 15% chance to knockback and stun the target.
Also, thieves have access to some really powerful high-level abilities. Most notable are the Time Stop trap, and the Assassination ability that makes every attack in a round into a backstab without the need to hide. Time Stop + Kai + Assassination = gg. Of course, I'm installing mods to make the game incredibly difficult to compensate for the strength of my main character, so it'll all even out in the end.
