Atrocious CTR - Need help with ad placement

I have been focused on building & ranking new shit for the most part but now I have started going back over my sites in an attempt to optimize and I think I am missing out on some easy money I am losing due to shitty ad placement, etc.

Currently my CTR is HORRENDOUS on basically every site. I have been looking for any material (newb guides, blogs, case studies, anything reliable..) that can shed some light on best practices for ad placement.

Right now I usually have an ad block above the fold, below article titles and before the post content. I haven't really researched much on how to do proper ad placement, etc., because I have focused on ranking and getting traffic. Now I am getting some traffic but these fuckers aren't clicking ads enough.

If anyone can spam me some nice links to read up on this stuff it would be awesome cause I have failed at finding any decent sources so far. Thanks bros.
 


Thanks I looked at that and then checked out some big content sites to see where they put everything and made a couple changes. It seemed to have a positive effect yesterday but today it's back to shit. I think I need to give it a week or so to have enough data to make a decision.

Another thing I am wondering is if anyone has an opinion on the optimal number of ads to place on a page?
